I am doing some research on the different laser eye clinics in the country. Does any one know why for eg the blackrock clinic etc charge €2200 per eye and then optilase charge €995 per eye. This is a huge price difference, what's the deal?

I had my eyes done in the Waterford Eye Clinic and it was €2,000 per eye. I wonder do these other clinic's who advertise for less have a lot of add on's. You know, it's such a price for the basic surgery plus such a price for something else and before you know it it's just as expensive?

Racram, what did you think of the Waterford Eye Clinic? I would be interested in getting laser eye surgery done there - near home. Dr O Reilly is the main man there I believe. My dad saw him when he had cataracts and there were people who travelled all the way from Galway to see him. He has a very good reputation.

Racram, just saw your post in a diff thread about Wford eye clinic!! Can you remember the name of the doctor that performed the laser and was it done in the Waterford Eye Clinic because my dad had his consults in Waterford but surgery in Aut Even (sp?) in Kilkenny?

AFAIK the price the cheaper advertised prices if for the most basic type of surgery, I see it as a hook to get people in the door before being giving the option of more advanced procedures such as Wavefront etc.

    Hi jaxy999,

Dr. O Reilly did my eyes and yes he has a very good reputation. Like your Dad my surgery was done in Kilkenny because in their old offices they didn't have the facilities. In his new offices he does everything which is great because my friend had her eyes done in January and her Left was done on the Wednesday and her right on the friday.
The Waterford Eye Clinic has a very good reputation!

I have gone and booked an assessment in WEC so fingers crossed I'm a suitable candidate. I have been dithering for a year about laser eye surgery - my family and friends are sick I listening to me on about it :D I will be seeing Dr Golchin.

I was the same, kept thinking and talking about doing it and then one day my glasses broke! I was in town and the nose pad broke on my brand new glasses so I marched down to the Eye Clinic office which was on the Mall then and made an appointment. I was sorry I didn't do it ten years earlier though!
    Good luck!!!!

Clinics like Optilase tend to have foregin surgeons who are only in Ireland for 20 days a month or so. Clinics like the Blackrock clinic where the doctors are usually associated with the Mater or the Eye and Ear are in Ireland permanetly and thus you get a better after care

I agree. Matt Cooper (Today FM) interviewed someone from one of these Clinic's (Can't remember if it was Optilase) and they said that the surgeon travelled over from the UK to perform the eye operations and all follow up examinations were conducted by nurses and not the eye surgeon. The Waterford Eye Clinic is the same as the Blackrock Clinic. Your seen by the same Eye surgeon from start to finish and on all follow up examinations up to a year after.:)
