Dubious, possibly racist hiring policy

What would you do, if your two managers were Indian, and all your team are european (the job requires a 2nd european language). Your team is hiring for another person. One of the managers tells two of your colleagues "I am looking to hire an Indian person".

Is this not blatantly racist and discriminatory?

Unless they have a very specific reason yes i would say so.
if they can prove that this indian person can do something any other nationality can not then no

They most definitely do not. That's why I found the manager stating he was going to hire an Indian guy quite offensive.

btw the majority of people in the south of India don't even speak Hindi.

That's pretty bad alright, although I do think it is a human "want" to want people of your own ethnicity around you. I doubt he is intentionally being racist, etc.

What options do you have which won't make him hate you?

Yeah, sounds pretty clearly racist, from what you described.

I understand that, but you DON'T make a statement like that to your (white) colleagues. If I said to a black or indian colleague "I want to hire a white person", I could be sacked, and rightly so!

There's only one CV from an Indian so far, he doesn't have a european language and I think he needs a visa, so if he gets hired I think it might be worth taking it further.

    Yeah, I think so too.

Actually that is wrong, if an employer said they were only taking "white" people e.t.c. people would cringe and accuse them of racism. Some employers clearly state that they won't/don't process work visas.
If they employ the Indian person that does not reach the job requirement; you SHOULD take it further.

Did anyone else hear him say this?? It'd be a bit of a disaster if it descended into a "my word against yours" situation.

Yeah, but he should stand his ground!

btw did any other employee hear this comment?

It does seem pretty shitty, whatever happened to the best person for the position unless there is a really good reason for Indians only? Nice ninja edit btw ;)

Damned foreginers, coming over here, taking our racism!

It's clearly racist though unless he can state a clear and defensible reason why he specifically wanted to hire an Indian person, can't think of any advantage they would necessarily have over any other applicant though

Just because he said it aloud it's made things a little awkward. He's thinking like most people in fairness.

The best thing is if you do bring it up with whomever you'll be accused of being racist.

Well you said your whole team are european, maybe they want to balance it out a bit?

That doesnt speak a european language which is required for the job?

He simply wants someone who he can relate too screw it if he's qualified.

This is usually how people operate (They want someone similar to themselves). Work in a company thats really diverse and its quite easy to notice. Teams with Irish managers seem to have a lot of Irish and the same for Indian, chinese, italian, french and so forth.
