Every now and then they come up second hand in Buckleys Auction rooms in Sandycove, Dublin. Condition varies but I've seen pretty decent ones. Uprights come up all the time at a fraction of the price of new ones. Trouble is you have to keep an eye on the place, and if you need one soon you could be waiting weeks or months! You could give them a call and maybe they'd take your number and call you if they get one in.

    Hi ,

have you tried Precision Pianos yet? they have opened a new showroom in the North Link Retail Park in Dundalk ( 042 93 32200 ) and they have a great choice of baby grand and grand pianos .. Check out their web page www.precisionpianos.com . They stock second hand and new pianos.. I got my piano from their Blayney shop and they're great to deal with. I shopped around a fair bit and found their prices were the best..

Hope this has been helpful.. best of luck with your search..

    Hi,

I'm looking to get a 2nd hand piano for my wife to use (hasn't played in years) and my kids to learn on. I've seen people advertising unused/unwanted piano's for free if you just collect or for a few hundred Euro. Not knowing how to judge the quality of a piano I don't want to end up with a piece of c**p which I in turn need to get rid of but at the same time if I'm getting something for nothing or for a knock down price I know I can't be that choosey. What would the piano enthusiasts out there recommend? Get a cheap one, have it tuned and if the wife and kids really get into it then invest in something better or just go to someone like Piano Plus and spend €1,500 or €2,000 getting a tuned 2nd hand model?

I'm not usually this tight but REALLY don't want to spend €2,000 for something which might end up gathering dust after the six month honeymoon period is over.

All thoughts both positive and negative much appreciated.

    Ben

    hey there,

I don't think Id risk taking a piano that someone is giving away for free.. It would prob be a piano that hasnt been looked after, prob rarely tuned and could perhaps be very old and wood worm ridden. If you do decide to go down this route check the following...
    1. that it is an iron framed piano.. lift the lid and have a look inside.

    2. that it is overstrung.. ie the strings cross over and arent just vertical.

    3. how long ago it was last tuned.. sometimes a piano that is left untuned for a long time can be impossible to tune.. it falls so flat that a tuner would not be able to tune it.. A fully tuned piano is very important when buying for a learner..

    4. check that all keys are intact and function.

It is possible to buy fully tuned pianos from dealers for less than 1500.. But I can't imagine you'll find a piano for less than 2000 in Piano Plus.. (check out their website) I really shopped around and found them considerably higher priced than everywhere else..

You could try also digital pianos.. they can be bought relatively cheap but they do have their downsides.. due to the constant updating of products your digital piano would prob become obsolete in five years or so and thus hard to move on.
A piano is an investment.. if cared for can be passed down generations.

I hope this is of some use.. Best of luck finding your piano.

    Thanks Pipin22,

If I did find a half decent un/under used piano looking for a new home how much should a tuning cost once I get it home?
