NTL MMDS Digital - Help !!

    Hi,

Have just had NTL digital installed (MMDS), as the monopoly Broadworks cable in my estate annoyed me so much I disconnected from them.

It seems that my DVD recorder wll not tune into the NTL channels individually, only on the Line 1 scart input from the decoder. Similarly, I have a digital TV, yet this too won;t pick up the NTL box's channels individually,

So is it the case that I am unable to record and watch different channels ?

Why does the decoder have RF in/out, and the wiring diagram has these cables conected to the TV ? Is that just for 'proper' cable connections ?

I am just as disappointed with NTL at this stage !!

If anyone could help quickly it would be appreciated !

    Thanks
    Simon

only the NTL box can tune in the channels - you will not be able to tune them in on your TV or DVD. So yes - you will have to watch whatever you're recording. You may be able to get NTL's PVR recorder - not sure if its available for MMDS customers yet.

    It is available for MMDS.

The decoder RF out is to allow "passthrough" of terrestrial channels if you are combining another aerial with your MMDS feed. This can sort of alleviate the problem of not being able to watch another channel while you are recording from your decoder.

If you do get the DVR, your existing DVD recorder won't go to waste, as the DVR only records on one tuner, the other is for live TV, you can use your DVD recorder to record live TV if necessary (small drop in quality, but better than nothing).

Unfortunately it is the case for all digital services that you will generally only be able to record on a VCR/DVDR the channel being output by the STB. Only way around it is to get a PVR (which won't do you any good as far as removable media is concerned). As an aside, analogue MMDS (no longer available on NTL) also requires an STB and was in the exact same situation as far as recording is concerned.

If and when DTT every gets properly started in this country, you will also have the option of DVD recorders with built-in DTT tuners to record a different (FTA DTT) channel, that's assuming the DTT service in this country doesn't end up 100% pay-TV too.
