Can someone you are sharing a network connection with access your computer without your permission?
Firewall is active but when i opened the Laptop it was unresponsive. I went to turn it off and got a warning message saying "someone else is logged on if you turn it off they may lose work"
    Am i just being paranoid

could be someone was remote desking onto your machine, to be honest without having a look at the laptops security config it would be difficult to say. Best bet is to disable the secondary login service aswell as disabling remote login. Also disable server service if it is started.

Also make sure to remove the guest account, change your password and if its on a domain do your best to prevent unauthorized access by other users(assuming you have local admin privileges).

That said, I'm no security expert, I'm just a software engineer. Any advice is given as is and I shall not be held accountable if you mess up your laptop:P

It was most likely your own session logged on and the laptop went to sleep and when you tried to force the shut down it was warning you that you were still logged on. It's good to be paranoid about security. :)

It could also be a second user account.

If you have more then one account & somebody switched users (Instead of logging off) you would get that Msg.
