Has any1 else out there noticed or had any problems with a slight sound delay on the movie channels whilst watching on a Sky HD box.

To date I have changed the customers HD box, changed the HDMI cable, tryed it via scart connection instead..but to no avail

Sky technical departments answer is to change TV

Or to use the optical output via an amplifier...

Customer was too happy at those suggestions as he pay full whack for Sky HD box and forked out €1900 for the tv at the same time ....

Check sound settings, there's a delay option to deal with amps etc.

I have only had that happen once or twice when I was having bad reception problems with the storms, the picture and sound would be out of synch all programmed and Id have to give.

What happens me more often is when I turn on the box I get picture but no sound so I have to switch the box off and on again for the sound to work.

Mine, goes out of sync occasionally on most channels, not just movies.
I find turning the box off and on again, and same with the tv cures it for me.

The delay setting on the SKY HD box is to compensate for the video processing delay in the receiver and plasma/lcd. Usually what happens is that the audio is ahead of the picture so you can use the delay setting in the SKY box to get the audio to match. People with AV amps usually have the same facility to delay the audio.

What the OP is experiencing seems to be a delay in the audio which is the opposite problem. I'd suggest that it is the SKY box that is causing the problem. Try re-setting the box and make sure it has the latest firmware. It could be the "instant rewind" facility in SKY+. I have noticed this happening on occasion on programmes I have recorded. The usual cure is a box reset. Crappy firmware?:(

As I already stated earlier I have already replaced the HD box to try and solve the problem but it is exactly the same, have also updated the firmware and tried viewing the picture via scart instead of HDMI and also the same problem occurs.

The customer doesn't have an av amp and doesn't wish to splash out any more cash which quite frankly I wouldn't blame him....

Bring a small portable tv with you when you go back and try it on that, if the problem isn't there then its the customers tv that's at fault.

Can you clarify that the delay is in the audio? i.e. that the audio is lagging behind the video... it's not always easy to determine. Is there a setting on the TV which is artificially delaying the audio/ What's the make/model of TV?

As I said earlier, the usual problem is that the audio is AHEAD of the video, because of the de-interlacing, scaling going on in the TV which delays the video by a couple of frames relative to the audio. Most quality TVs will compensate for this additional video processing by delaying the audio appropriately.

Maybe the TV is far away ;)

I've had delay weirdness with AV amps, does this only occur with the movie channels, or is it because the same content has been displayed for a time and something in the TV is slowly losing sych over time? Does it get worse the longer its left, does the lag always stay the same?

Tv is directly above the Sky Hd box connected with a 2metre HDMI cable, the sound is indeed behind the video. I have since referred the problem back to the shop where I get my equipment from ...they went and viewed and have contacted their supplier as to see what course of action to be taken next..

    A strange one..

I also noticed a big difference betwwen HD channels and standard SD. When I switch to HD from normal I find myself turning up the volume on the TV. It is extremely annoying, I have a 40" sony which is only new so am pretty confident there isnt any problen with the set. I ve messed around with all settings but to no avail. Guess ill just have to live with increasing the volume every time i switch to a HD channell.

Aha .... I may know what this is , some newer sets have the same audio delay that the sky box has , and with a default of 5ms already set , so the audio is already behind the video , but turn it to 0 on the TV and all is fine.

I spent 2 extra hours on an install recently for a friend and got caught by this as it was the first time I'd seen the feature on a TV. It might be worth looking into !

Think I had already suggested that there might be a setting on the TV to add in delay - but you'd never notice a 5ms delay! A TV frame is 40ms (20ms for a field) and the sets usually store a couple of fields in order to de-interlace them. I believe that the majority of the problem is with the SKY HD box, though. I was watching RTE news at one today and the sync was dreadful - needed 60ms. I then was watching the Cream re-union concert I recorded from SKY Arts last night and I had to set the delay back to zero to get the sync right.
