Because hddvd players wont stop working just because they've stopped making them.Hddvd movies will still provide HD entertainment for years to come. There are a load of movies out there, bout 300 i believe. They'll be goin cheap and if you have a player, then why not??

a very valid point - only worry I'd have is if I were a HD-DVD owner is if there were any issues with the hardware - let's be honest people will be getting ripped off on repairs etc.....
but yeah once the hardware lasts so should the discs and they will be going really cheap - what price are they in the US if they are that in Germany ???
price of players should go through the floor too....

On Amazon.com they are available for $99.99 incl shipping.

I will not be buying one. I have neither HDDVD's nor Blue Rays.
I may start my collection soon but I am waiting til Blue Ray player prices drop to around 200 bucks before I purchase the hardware.
That could take some time however, but I hope not.

maybe an autobot but not a decepticon ;)

I think you would need a transformer, plus i don't think it would play back region 2 dvd's.

I think there's no region encoding with hd-dvd....or is that blu-ray? Definitely one of them.

none with hd-dvd, but dvds are still region locked in the players

so you can playback hddvd from anywhere but not dvds, they're locked to region 1 in us, region 2 in eu

there is an unofficial firmware upgrade for the eu players to play region 1 discs but i don't think it works on the american players to let it do region 2

BluRay a lot of them are region Locked. As for the HD-DVD players becoming obsolete, I see that LG are going to continue to support HD-DVD so can expect at the very least HD-DVD Rom drives, so when my Tosh dies I'll just rip my HD-DVD collection and burn them to Blu-Ray recordable media so I won't have to double dip :)

It's nice when things start going cheap. Pity I don't have a HDDVD player...I don't even have a HDTV yet :(
