Guys this is a great event, I've competed at it many times.

Just don't bother with the semi-contact rubbish and the rest is fantastic.

I think its Europe's biggest annual Martial Arts event.

    Is it only kickboxing?

Best competition of this ilk in Europe at the very least. Had a few runs out at this event in my Semi Contact days, very very good, can't recommend it enough. And even if you don't compete in it, stick around to watch Raymond Daniels fight and the American teams. Its like an ongoing sequel to best of the best!

Semi contact. What a load of Bol*ocks! Might as well be play Tig in the play ground. Come on the flames?

Semi-contact is amazing for building quick reaction speed and co- ordination. I don't know any decent semi-contact fighters who can't defend themselves. I know it mightn't be the most macho form of fighting, but a good semi-contact fighter will be a good fighter.

I won't be able to go to it this year. I'd love to see Daniels get whopped. I suppose you can be that cocky when your that good.

At least you are being honest about trolling lol

Training in martial arts and self defence are not exactly the same thing, this has been discussed ad nauseum on here already so I will just leave it for now, but if you mean that a semi contact fighter could do well in a one on one fill contact fighter with a random opponent then assuming they are the same weight and size, the semi contact fighters techniques will get him into trouble more than get him out of it.

If the opponent is bigger and stronger than you can forget about semi contact, it won't help at all.

If the opponent has any kind of training in a full contact art then it will be over even quicker, the soundtrack would be Semi Contact fighter "tap, tap-tap, tap", FC Fighter "Wham!" SC Fighter "........."
I am not saying that from the outside looking in either, I have a healthy semi contact background before I moved to MMA/FC.

That all being said this is all a response to a troll above and completely off topic, if it wasn't for my terminator operating system I would self-delete this post :)

That wasn't my arguement at all. I never brought up Semi-contact Vs Full Contact.

Obviously If you want to fight full-contact train full-contact. To say otherwise would be paramount to me saying a 100meter runner should train by doing marathon runner style training.

My point was that anybody who fights semi-contact at decent level will be a far more competant fighter than if they didn't or just played tig.

Depends I guess. Semi-contact might give you a false sense of security in some areas.

Is that the Roy baker event? I saw clips from that last year on tv, it looks enormous. An achievement in organisation if nothing else.
Saw an American guy I think win it, seemed like the cliched brash talented super cocky lightning fast type. I have to say I wasn't impressed with the fighting i saw, but they were very quick, had fast reactions too.
I'd say if they took up a more realistic way of training they would be formidable.
(Thats not meant to provoke anyone btw)
It was like fencing with gloves instead of swords, if that makes sense

yeah its Roys event its a long hard weekend for club members but worth it, most of the AKAI clubs help out by either keeping scores and or sending their qualified refs etc.

the Irish open is a great event !it is a good one to kickstart the year and see how the fittness is ! the only downside is the weight dvisions in the light contact ! in both men and womens divisions there is a 5kg gap ! that is the best part of a stone. i know it light contact but really i've seen some light contact bouts go as heavy as full contact. Also the mens division weights start at 60kg and the womens 55kg. I think one or two lighters divisions could be added !

Yeah I have to agree with on that, the light contact divisions are really though to win due to the size of the weight categories and the number of entries.

As for 'Some light contact bouts go as heavy as full contact' is fact, it really depends on the ref and most of them are full contact ref's and lot of the full contact clubs take part. The light contact area is the area where the order of malta earn their money...

    good luck...

Not really. From my experience many points fighters weren't able to handle to instensity/toughness of continuous sparring competition, not to mind FC or anything like that.

True enough. They don't generally go as heavy as proper full contact but it still can get quite heavy, which it really shouldn't if the refs are doing their jobs right. I've been hit/hurt with some hard shots in Light contact, but it's still a very different beast to full contact (it actually can be more dangerous in it's own way at times).
