Advice Please -- Dell Vostro 1400 or M1330?

My laptop is slowly dying of old age and I need to replace it before it's too late. I'm hoping to get something relatively light becuse I travel quite a bit but also relatively powerful. I need it mainly for word processing, some stats packages and some VB programming. I've looked at both the Vostro and the M1330 but I can't make up my mind. I just need someone to sway me either direction. If I get the vostro I'll get it with xp, but If I get the other I'll probably ditch vista and load xp. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

You will get a similar specced Vostro for better money than the XPS. The screen is a little bigger, and is available in a higher-res if screen space is an important factor to you.

But the M1330 will be slimmer, smaller and lighter, with a nicer design. Plus some features such as the LED backlit screen (brighter & better battery life).

That's pretty much it - do you want the best value for money, or will you pay a little extra to have something a bit lighter/sleeker.

Also note that if you're bargain hunting - the Vostro's can't be ordered on the EPP site, and they also seem pretty rare on the Dell outlet page. So the XPS might close the gap in terms of value for money if you know where to look.

    Thanks voodoo_child
I think you've pinpointed my problem -- do I get the fancy M1330 with a lower spec or the vostro with a better spec for the same amount of money? I think I know what I should do...

Incidently, I am aware of the outlet site but what does EPP stand for.

EPP is employee purchase programme - it's a perk for employees of Dells 'trusted partners' like AIB, Bank of Ireland, ESB etc, but checks are non-existant so anyone can use it. And it's open to 'extended families' so chance are you're eligible anyhow.

It offers a % reduction depending on how much you're spending, but doesnt apply to the 'business models' like Vostro's as far as i know.

Google 'Dell ie epp' and it's the first hit.

    XPS is sextastic :P

If you can afford the M1330, go for it

Yeah get the M1330. Remember, you're not comparing crap hardware vs good hardware, you're comparing good hardware vs slightly better hardware, the differences in which will most certainly not be distinguishable using the likes of Visual Basic! The 1400 is a nice machine, but the M1330 is a thing of beauty. wish I'd gotten one now instead of my 1500, which I bought for gaming and have since done nothing but watch movies on.
