1080i is better. most of the games are only 720p though. thats why it keeps changing on your tv. the XMB will display in 1080 and when you load a game it switches to 720. it tells you on the back of a game box if it is 720 or 1080.

1080i isn't necessarily better. It does display images at a higher resolution but 720p displays movement a lot better.

it depends on the TV... for some 720p would be better for others 1080i - or ideally 1080p would be king of the hill if your tv supports it

Now, granted, I've never unstood all this 720 1080 talk, so I'm most likely doin something wrong, but on my tv which supports 1080p, I can't read most of the writing on the main menus and have to switch to 720 (which doesn't look as fancy). Is this normal, or am I just thick?

What size a TV is it? Too small to fully realise the differences between 720p and 1080p?

Nearly all the PS3 games I have play in 720p automatically even though my TV accepts 1080p input. Looks fine to me.
I would go for 720p (progressive) over 1080i (interlaced)

I've been wonderin about this too.Mt tv has 1080p input but when it downscales, will it downscale to 1080i or 720p??

720p is the highest most games support at the moment. I think GT5 will support 1080p though.

However, if you are watching a Blu-Ray movie on a 1080p TV, it should use that as the default resolution. If not, check your display settings.

it will use 720p as progressive is far better for games as it has a higher framerate

I have a ps3 magazine that answereed this question exactly.
It said that in general 720p is better for games while 1080i would look better when watching movies etc.
It said that of course 1080p is the best but there wouldnt be an amazingly huge difference unless your tv is pretty big (roughly over 32'')

Well thats what it says and i have to agree with it.
