    Folks,

We are looking at putting a brown natural stone on the front of our house. We have seen it on a house already and are waiting to call in to ask them where they got it but Im wondering if anyone here knows of what area we should be looking to get brown stone? I have pics of the stone that I can post if needed.

I would guess you are talking about sandstone, it varies from a golden to brown to redish in colour. Its a nice stone, be sure to get a mix of colours or else it will look like a recon product....

It could be sandstone or limestone, or even granite.
Although most native lime stone is grey-black, such as kilkenny black and dublin kelp.
Best bet is to view samples

Its a sandy brown colour so I doubt it's Limestone.

Limestone does comes in those colours, but not natively. Southern england and northern france share a strange limestone. But most likely it isn't, i was just pointing out an option.
This link shows limestone (Im basing this on its location) in unuaual colours

Putting up a pic might help. Anything similar in the second link

I am currently building my house entirely with a brown sandstone. It is a split stone which depending on the way you orientate it can be brown or a grey/brown colour. We chose it after seeing some houses around Kildare with it. It came from a (small) quarry at Wolfhilll in Laois (near stradbally). I can send you a photo if you like of post it.. The suppliers are Maher Stone in Stradbally ( I have no connection). Tony Maher is the owner and is great to deal with...

It's always best to use local stone if at all possible, it blends in with its surroundings, it reduces transport pollution and it helps the local economy.
Whatever you do don't use chinese or indian sandstone or granite, it causes silicosis in a sometimes very young workforce and with no health and safety in the workplace.
Mellor your right there are brown limestones (very nice to carve) and some from Bath called 'Bathstone', and Portland, Caan etc. but they don't weather well in Ireland and their porous.
Sandstone can be porous or not depending on various factors which I cant remember, but most Irish sandstone is very durable just remember to always wear your mask when working it.

Yup there the ones I was referring to, Bathstone (the picture above is the baths in bath) being the southern england one, and Caan the northern france. I have a feeling they are actually the same stone deposit.
I came accross one of them in a church in dublin, and its been over 100 years and they have weathered quite well, as good as the surrounding dublin limestone.
But they are lighter than the pics above

Well lads .Im ready to bring stone mason on site im using sandstone with a dry finish .Im concerned that this kind of finish would be pourous especially as my house is south facing.Do you recommend scratch coating the block work before stone goes on?

Guys, I called into the house that we found the stone above on. They said it's Connemara Granite and they got it from Cashla Quarries in Connemara. But I cant find any numbers to contact them on.

Dont suppose anyone knows how to contact these folks?

    Hey sculptor,

In Monivea, Co. Galway. Just outside Athenry. This is the only stone that we found that would really look nice on the house. Ill keep trying the number of the guy the others bought the stone off. If not Id nearly drive to Cashla, Connemara on Monday.

Well Ive emailed about 5 or 6 different companies around Galway now to see if they know who supplies this stone. I think the quarry is owned by Sean Ban Breathnach, not that it helps me getting the stone

Folks, I figured out that the quarry is actually called Casla. If anyone has a number for this quarry Id really appreciate it.

I dont think we need a separate thread for this as you have already posted this in your other thread about stone. I'll move the posts to there.

Have you looked into using Donegal sandstone?
I have built a house with it and am very happy with it.
It is a light brown/cream colour with blue mixed through it
I can PM you a picture if you are interested in having a look.

    Hi,
Be sure to check the conditions of your C3 recieved from the county council, sometimes they specify natural local stone to be used.
To be sure to be sure.

And a quick update. Got through to the guy and ordered the stone. Was told he'd ring the following Tuesday to arrange delivery. Ordered my sand and got that delivered. Havent been able to reach the guy since. Not answering any of my calls. Its painful at this stage but I cant afford to go with anyone else as the prices are crazy.

Who is it that you're trying to get hold of? If it's the one I think he hasn't logged in here in 2 years?
Edit, right saw you had his number.

No worries Biko. Was trying the other guy as a last resort but I have the main quarry guys number. Spoke to him about 3 weeks ago and he was all on for getting the stone dug out and delivered over to me. Phones ringing so its not like he's got it turned off. Even tried sending a txt as a last resort today!
