firstly a little background, i have two 22inch monitors and one windows vista pc which are connected to my ati x1900xtx graphics card through DVI input.

this is what i want to achieve.

    1. be able to dual screen my windows box (like i have set up now) and control with my keyboard and mouse i have now.

    2. ocassionally connect my macbook laptop to allow one screen to be windows and the other to be the display for the macbook whilst controlling both from the same keyboard and mouse as above.

can this be done, i have a very limited knowledge (actually i'll admit, i have feck all) about KVM switches but it seems to be what i needed.

    • there is also the possibility that i may need to control another windows machine so upgradability would be nice.
    • both mouse and keyboard are usb.
    • can KVM's take care of speakers too? i have a 6.1 creative surround sound system as well, it isn't a requirement that this works.
what is the best KVM for the job that doesn't cost the world.

Yes you could do this with a KVM.

KVM's are available for both VGA & DVI & can also be got for either PS2 style or USB style keyboards & mice. Some are available with sound too.

Then of course you can get them dedicated to run on a "Dual Monitor" system or single monitor systems.

Some even work very well using the PS2 to USB adapter (But not all).

You can also get them with the option to allow "Hotkey" switching (Rather then physically pressing a button on the unit itself)

I'm using a Linkskey 4-Port Dual Monitor KVM with Optional DVI or HDB-15 Video Interface & love it to bits. It was quite difficult to source though & didn't come cheap either. I had to get it from the States & pay through the nose for the privilege too.

I also have a Rextron My Hopper 4 port VGA single monitor with sound in the workshop & that too works extremely well (Again I had to source outside Ireland).

You can of course pick up a standard 2 port with no bells or whistles from the likes of Komplett for about €20 but I've found them to be very temperamental & basic.

You need to map out exactly what you want

    Port Type wise

    Port Qty wise

    Connection type wise

    Single or dual monitor application

    And with or without sound

    Then try to source.
