I was going to delete this, but it might be in interesting topic for discussion.

    Heres some feedback.....

    1) It's always a good idea to ask permission from the owner/moderator of a board before you decide to pimp your wares.

    2) Comments on Media Portal like "100% Better that Microsoft" make you look like you don't understand what you are competing with and don't know enough about the software available. Plus, you are restricting yourself which from a business perspective is a big mistake. Most people would find the EPG a PITA to setup TBH.

    3) Charging for MediaPortal, albeit a small fee is probably not a good idea.

    4) Charging for this is a VERY bad idea.

I think its needed, but TBH if you want to have a stable business thats not too likely to come under fire from service providers, you need to change the above as a baseline.

Dont get me wrong, I think its great that you are giving it a go, but I think you need to take a more professional look at it. The money is in installation, so keep that in mind too.

    My 2c. SC

THE SHOP IS TEMPORARY! THE ONLINE SHOP WILL SELL HARDWARE AND SERVICES ONLY

IF YOU READ THE FULL DISCRIPTION YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT I KNOW THE SOFTWARE INSIDE OUT! I WAS SAYING THAT MEDIA PORTAL IS BETTER THEN MCE! IF YOU THINK OTHER WISE YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! MCE DOESN'T SUPPORT X264, DOESN'T SUPPORT DVB-C,DVB-S, DISEC. THE EPG IN MEDIA PORTAL DOESN'T NEED ANY CONFIGURING IN IRELAND. IT AUTO GRABS IT FROM YOU PROVIDER.

    3) Charging for MediaPortal, albeit a small fee is probably not a good idea.

PEOPLE CHARGE €5 ON EBAY AND EVEN THOUGH IT IS OPEN SOURCE THEY STILL PAY FOR IT. 99C IS NOTHING!! JUST DO A SEARCH IN EBAY FOR MEDIA PORTAL AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF! IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT OPENING AN EBAY SHOP YOU WOULD REALISE YOU NEED A EXTREEMLY CHEAP ITEM TO SELL. SO IT BOOSTS YOUR FEEDBACK SCORE IS THE QUICKEST POSSIBLE TIME.

    4) Charging for this is a VERY bad idea.

THIS WILL NOT BE ON MY WEBSITE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.

THANKS FOR YOU CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ON THE SITE! PRICING OF THE ACTUAL COMPUTERS, THE COMPONETS USED AND IF YOU THINK THIS COULD BE SOEMTHING THAT THERE IS A MARKET FOR IN IRELAND. I'M SURE I ALREADY KNOW YOUR ANSWER THOUGH!!

    Caps are worse than pimping.

I'd love to get one of those high end systems, but realistically €1100 plus shipping is way too much. Looks nice though (are they 17" wide?) Best of luck with it. (drop the caps though mmmkay ??)

Wow, that was some reaction to decent feedback. SouperComputer gave you feedback on his first impressions based on what you were selling, and what that might imply about the seller. You asked for feedback and got it. It was about the site and not personal. He was doing you a favour. I'd hate to see how you might possibly react where a customer has a problem with something. I suspect that, based on that reply, it won't be a problem for readers of this forum!

Not an area I know much about and not a forum I frequent very often but I clicked on your link. I'd echo the comments about caps. I would also say that you should read through the text of the featured item "100% better ... " on that eBay portal. I am assuming that you have access to it. It is littered with spelling and grammar mistakes. It can suggest a lack of professionalism, which I am sure is not what you you want to convey. It might be a good idea to review it.

sorry about the caps I just wanted to get my anger accross. I'll turn the volume down now. RAR.

well you have to look at the components in that system. quad core, 8800 GT, 1TB raid 0, bluray, etc. it's not gonna be cheap.

thats why I have some for the 600 quid mark.

what do you think of the case. my other options where Zalman and silverstone but they are more expensive.

I figure before long every one will want to have a htpc under there TV. IPTV is just around the corner as well.

Ok I agree but this feedback was not on the actual products. the shop will be based around the hardware. not the software. The software side of this shop detracting from the main products.

I'm looking for comments on the actual media centres. if that is ok.

If there are spelling mistakes I will filter through them. thanks

Sweet Jebus that reply to a polite constructive post has put me right off going near the ebay or website when it's eventually live. You should be aware that perspective customers will probably be reading here, and an over reaction like that is likely to be off putting.

I may have over reacted but I don't see how this is a constuctive comment

I'M CLOSING THIS THREAD BECAUSE IT HAS GONE WAY OFF TOPIC.

Or hasn't gone the way you hoped?

Something like "Wow, great idea, I'll take 6 of them!!" :)

Looks like I struck a nerve there....... I gave some straight up business advice based on my fairly regarded experience with the subject, you threw a hissyfit for no apparent reason
THE SHOP IS TEMPORARY! THE ONLINE SHOP WILL SELL HARDWARE AND SERVICES ONLY

I couldn’t help but notice the irony in this reply, the temporary part that is. Hardware and services that are for sale you say? I, and indeed most people would consider that pimping.

I found it difficult to read the fully description to be honest. It was filled with fanboyism. Not a good thing if you want to build a business. I don't doubt that you know Mediaportal well, my point what this you do not seem know the alternatives as well as you do Mediaportal. Diversification is important for any business. There is no evidence that that is happening with you so far. If I'm wrong, fine, demonstrate that in your ads.

Wow, feedback pimping, how admirable. I didn't need to search for others "selling" Mediaportal, im sure others sell it, I dont need to search, that wasn’t my point. My point was its might be an idea to raise your standards above others. Just because others sell it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

They are fine, nothing outstanding, what kind of warranty and support are you offering? By that I don’t mean a generic warranty, specifically, what are you going to support for people?

There are prettymuch two types of customers IMO.

    1) The type with enough techs savvy to build their own systems, unless yours are extremely cheap (to cheap to be viable IMO) then they won’t be interested.

    2) The type that don't have the knowledge to build their own. Selling a computer is not enough, you need to sell a SOLUTION. Why should they buy from you over Dell, HP etc etc. Basic business stuff, dome some SWAT for example. Before you get all defensive again, remember you arent selling to me :)
"2) Comments on Media Portal like "100% Better that Microsoft" make you look like you don't understand what you are competing with and don't know enough about the software available. Plus, you are restricting yourself which from a business perspective is a big mistake. Most people would find the EPG a PITA to setup TBH."

How constructive do you want? You look like a fanboy from the description of Mediaportal. My advice is to either skill up or change your style of advertising whichever is appropriate.

Not Really. This Tread Is Going 1 Way. The Post Is Being Side Tracked About A Product That Will Not Even Be In The Actual Shop. I Wanted To See What Every One Though Of The Products Not My Grammer Or Heading

Thats fair enough, but imagine putting up a picture of your car saying "look at my new alloys", but the car is in ribbons, what kind of comments do you think you would get?

I decided against deleting this thread, why? Because I hope someone else with the right attitude will read it, take the advise onboard and setup a company that will provide a good product/service.

In the meantime, have a read of "crowning the consumer" by Fergal Quinn, complaints and criticism are a good thing, weather its relevant to your question or not, is not relevant. ;)
I figure before long every one will want to have a htpc under there TV. IPTV is just around the corner as well.

I agree, but if your attitude is anything like what has been demonstrated so far, you wont be making much money from it I can assure you.

There is no such thing as being your own Boss, its not possible, the customers become your "boss". Remember this before you start getting snotty with potential customers on the one of only two dedicated Media Centre\HTPC forums in the country.

Take this thread onboard and you have the principles for a very good business, I know this from multiple first-hand experiences.

Best of luck, you'll need it.

    Soup
