Trading up/in

    Hi all,

Bit unsure how to proceed with something so maybe you could offer advice. I currently have a 2000 Yamaha Royal Star Venture (i.e. a bus) that I've been trying to sell privately for the last year or so. Given that it's a bit of a specialist bike, I've up to now been unsuccessful despite a few longwinded enquiries and test rides.

So I'm thinking of trading it in for something a bit lighter and more agile, like a 1150GS Adventure (of similar value, might throw 1/1.5k into the pot), keep that for a year or so and then flog that. I assume the GS will be easier to sell? I've got my eye on a 2002 gs adventure for around 8k so assuming the guys at the garage dont try and screw me too much on the value of my current bike I probably won't have alot to pay. Ideas?

I'm not sure what you're bike it worth but dealers tend to give a bit less when trading in, especially if the bike worth about the same as what they're selling otherwise they'd make no profit.

Ring the dealer and find out.

Keep this bit to yourself if you go near a dealer anyway. In fact, tell them you've had interest in it but for convenience you want to trade in. Remember-this isn't a good time to sell a bike as it's still so cold but you should be able to drive a hard bargain buying. Maybe buy now and sell your bus in the summer?

Having recently bought a house, can't afford to do the above.. That said, I'm in no rush to do the trade in either. I figured I'd get an early start because the weather has been behaving lately and there's been more bikes than usual on the road lately :D

If you're considering bringing your bus to one of the BMW dealerships, then be prepared to inhale sharply, have the blood run to your cheeks and have your heart rate increase sharply.
I may be generalizing a little, bit from my experience, unless it's a BMW, they have no interest it in, are going to pass it on to a 3rd party as soon as possible and as such, they'll give you fa, for your pride and joy..

Better to keep selling privately. Happy shopping. Great bike..

thought as much.. the vibe I got was if the 3rd party shops they sell non-bmw's to aren't interested, they won't let me spend my money. They want me to bring the bike in for a once over by their mechanics to determine value and whatnot. I already brought the damn thing in there last year but typically enough the guy I was dealing with in there has mysteriously disappeared and no longer seems to work there. Might just take a spin into my local bike shop and see what other options are available. The private selling quest will continue of course.
