I lifted this from Iggy's blog.

profits for LV casinos in 2007 by area:

    Slot Machines - 174,677 units - $8.5 billion
    Table Games - 5,801 units - $4.2 billion
    Poker tables - 907 tables - $168.0 million

us poker players really ain't all that important to the suits....just over 1% of total profits

makes me wonder what the equivalent numbers are for the local casinos here?

I think poker's main attraction to the casinos is it draws in new people who might not otherwise set foot in a casino. How much of that slots or gaming profits comes from poker players?

It's fairly easy to work out that poker tournaments are not big moneymakers for the casinos here. Almost loss leaders in fact. But many of the people you see at the gaming tables originally came in for poker.

Poker's like the weed your local drug dealer gives you for free in the hope you'll eventually have a K a day coke habit to feed

I wish my local drug dealer would give me free weed....... Actually I just wish I had a local drug dealer!

I'm very suprised that there is only 907 poker tables in Vegas though???

I was talking to someone who should know and they said that over 80% of the revenues of that club came from the non poker tables, so not quite as skewed as the Vegas stats, but still not a massive part. However, poker players still contribute a good proportion of the non poker revenues as well I'd say, so one hand feeds the other.

Judging by the attitude of management in the SE the percentage breakdowns may not vary so much.

slightly unfair comment Lloyd - I would differentiate strongly between the poker management and the overall management in the SE

I'd be 100% sure he was not referring to John/Alex here, but to the SE management overall.

    Those figures were interesting.

Gross poker revenue per table is actually better than I thought it would be -- about $200K annually as I recall.

I suppose it's not great on a square footage basis versus the slots, with an annual average return per unit of some $50K, but anything that gets the punters into the rooms is a good thing.

My cousin is a long-time Vegas resident and had contemplated a partnership in an affinity pub -- these are sports bars that attract fans with an allegiance to just one particular team; in this case, the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL franchise. But the business plan was totally contingent on securing a slot or video poker license for no more than two or three units (the partner had connections). The gambling machines would represent the profit center; the food and beverage operation and pub theme were solely to attract punters.

To be honest, im not surprised at those stats at all. Based on a net floor area basis poker is one of the worst earners in the casino.
As for the comments that it gets people into the casinos, thats wrong too imo. In vegas, the vast vast majority have no interest in poker, and are happy spend a few dollars on a slot machine or roulette (the very fact that they do this means they are not there to make money but have a good time)

The getting people in comments are related to Irish establishments mostly, where it would be a far more valid comment.
