based on the book idea for the peoples exhibition.

I know we have the boards exhibition idea still floating around out there. so maybe this could work in conjunction with that. dependant on how many photo's are beinging submitted for that. I was wondering if maybe we could sell a book of our prints at the exhibition.

    just an idea like

sounds like an idea...of course not going to work for me because I didn't submit anything to the exhibition before the deadline.

well it could be expanded, to include everyone. Like a boards photograhy book. But someone else can come up with the name.

Not crazy idea - it is mooted in the thread on the exhibition (I think jaqian brought it up if I remember rightly). I have been looking at book options and I know that blurb and lulu are well thought of it. I just haven't tested either lot of software yet.

I will be back to the exhibition planning this week.

A book called RAW was made a while ago, from people here and photographyireland.net

There's a fair bit of work involved (And politics)

Does it involve tribunals ??? :D

/shudders/ remembers the thoughts of the Halifax Calendar.

It is a wonderful idea (qualify that by saying under a certain circumstance). I can only imagine how complex it would be, given that people everywhere will have completely differing opinions once the basic concept is sold i.e. production of a book of photographs. Some people will rightly feel photography is their job and will want to be 'paid' for their image to be used, others will be really happy to hand over the image rights and see themselves published, whilst others may be real upset if their images don't make the cut.

I'd suggest to appoint a benevolent dictator (Trish does that sound like you?) and establish the basis of production - depending on the focus of the production one might consider picking a charity of broad applicability who would be a benefactor of any profit (this will be a problem - a.k.a. politics...), or establish the case of disbursements of any profit to contributors if it were that particular route that the project took. The benefit of involving a charity would be that many of them have very well developed fund-raising engines which would equate to larger exposure of the publication and given that many of us won't ever see national publication it could have some attraction to those to participate.

eeeek.... the thoughts of it! You definitely should do it through a benevolent dictator who basically decides the format and then people buy in or don't. Selection of images to include could be done either through the same dictator although that could end up getting personal //irrational fear// or could be diffused through a committee of well respected individuals a.k.a. crony's :D

If publishing, you gotta think about how do you get a 'stock' to then sell and where to sell them. Befriend a cash rich publishing house perhaps. Blurb and Lulu will print on demand but you can hardly sell at an exhibition / fund-raiser unless you have a printed stock. A charity may attract some benefactor type that wants to do things with their ill gotten foreign residence tax savings (although the committee may have to sack the benevolent dictator for that to actually happen :D ).

I'm sure there are a million and one other things to be considered.

    Good luck with it.

mmmm I've been called a dictator only once so far in my life and I wasn't known as benevolent, an uprising occurred and well the girl guide company in question has never been the same since (infact they disbanded a few years later, after they begged me to come back.)

But enough of my Dictatorship. I'm liking the committe of cronys idea much better. I was thinking if it was to go to a charity well we do have our own santa strike force, but charities can be decided at a later date.

Great idea but yeah I'm sure it would be full of politics and what not. As for Blurb, a lecturer of mine swears by them and I've been playing around with their software for a while now as I'm hoping to get a book done up myself. Now all i need is some money.....and a new job.

Blurb is terrific - I've printed off about 15 books at this stage and the results are excellent.

More importantly, the blurb software allows you to invite collaborators.
On the downside, you can't charge a mark-up if you're based in Europe.

You'd have to decide on how many photos to include as that will determine price. You don't want the book to be too big or too expensive. On Blurb the Standard landscape (10*8) here is a breakdown on their prices... Of course the more you buy the better the discount check out the link below

    Standard landscape (10*8)
    Pages Softcover Hardcover Price
    20-40 €14,95 €22,95
    41-80 €16,95 €26,95
    81-120 €22,95 €28,95
    121-160 €25,95 €30,95
    161-200 €30,95 €36,95
    201-240 €33,95 €45,95
    241-280 €37,95 €49,95
    281-320 €45,95 €52,95
    321-360 €49,95 €56,95
    361-440 €52,95 €60,95

I think the nest way to do this would be to have a commitee/cronys to determine what gets in the book. Maybe work off of printed photos or a Flickr group?
