    Hi
I think someone recommended the Canon EF IS 17-85mm USM lens ?

is this a good replacement for the 18-55 kit lens ? (for EOS 400D)

Also can someone recommend a good "nifty fifty" lens , I see some are about
€100 others €800 ... yet they all "seem" to have a similiar f setting, maybe its the glass quality ..

I'd guess it's the difference between the f1.8 and f1.4.
The f1.8 is a class little lens :)

so you would recommend the 50mm f1.8 EF Mk2 ?

    its only £79 on ffordes.com

why is the 1.4 so much more expensive ? does that 0.4 make all that difference ?

The f/1.4 lens is quite different in structure. It has a better USM motor, quicker to focus, sharper lens, better build quality, and the .4 difference is certainly there for low light.

i wouldnt say quicker focus... tried one and it struggled to focus compared to 1.8...tho it was at 1.4 in low light

79£ is a bit expensive for it.. you can get one far cheaper inc. delivery on ebay.

like said, the f/1.4 is competly differently built..

and then the f/1.2 L, well thats firstly 'L' glass.. so its gonna be pricy from the start.

I guess it would depend on the camera body too.

I've used them both on my 350d, and own the 1.4. The 1.4 is a good bit better in quality, even if using both at 1.8. Also is quicker and quieter to focus with the USM. It's definately a better lens, but I don't think it's really worth the price difference. It's around 3 times the price, but is probably only worth twice the amount.
Your other option is to go for a 50mm Macro lens.
