hi looking to go to france by ferry in june. had a quick look and it seems expensive compared to flying. dates are flexible, will be bringing one car and either 2 or 4 people. would consider landbridge option. would also like to try a truckers ferry?

prices seem to make the fly drive option more viable...

    any advice?

    thanks.

Of course it's expensive compared to flying! Try bringing a car on a Ryanair flight!

Anyway, landbridge is generally the cheaper option however unless you're planning to overnight in the UK the drive down from Wales to Dover or wherever you sail from to France can be pretty stressful when there's a deadline. I can't remember ever going from Holyhead to the south of England when there hasn't beem some major delay on a motorway en route.

I've never done Rosslare to Le Havre/Cherbourg but the idea of just getting onto the boat and next day driving off in France is appealing!

    I have done the following:

    1. The ferry from Cork to Roscoff with Brittany ferries, the ship was clean, reasonable food quality & price.

    2. Landbridge via the UK. Once by fast ferry from Dover to Calais and another time by the Eurotunnel, again Dover to Calais. I used these options when heading down to the East of France or to other parts of Europe. As for travelling - I left Lille at 07:00 in the morning and was back in Limerick by midnight on the return leg of one of my holidays, this had two stops on the motorway in England. I usually use Stena to get to the UK (Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead).

Never tried the fly/drive but would certainly consider it now due to the rise in ferry costs and the reduction in air costs.

I know a lot of folk talk about bringing home the wine but you'd buy a lot of wine here for the price difference between ferries and planes.
