What's the best way to refund an Ebay buyer after we mutually agreed to cancel a sale? Tried to do it by the "issue refund" in Paypal but wouldn't let me because I have no funds in my paypal account. Tried to transfer funds into Paypal from registered Irish bank account and it says "Add funds is not available".

Since you've either spent or withdrawn the funds from you Paypal account then I don't think you can reverse the payment. You may need to send the buyer the money, as a new transaction. He would have to pay fees to receive this though, and he may not want to do it this way as it leaves him in a situation where you could contest the payment and take the money back.

Bit of a dilemma, probably best to try contacting Paypal. Also, you can't add funds from an Irish bank account, so unless you have a credit card registered, you won't be able to send the money to him at all (unless you receive more money from someone else).

If you trust him (does anyone ever trust anyone on Ebay?) you can send a new payment for more than the original one to cancel out the fees, so he essentially gets back what he paid you. I had to do it recently....pretty painful lol.

Phoned Paypal. You're right, they don't accept transfers from Irish bank accounts (why doesn't it say that somewhere?) Solution is to send Paypal a cheque. However, will take 7 days to clear so buyer will not be happy.

Why don't you use 3V credit to credit buyers Paypal account might be quicker

Because then I will not get fees automatically refunded?

Contact the buyer so and let him know the situation and that it'll take a while to refund him. Hopefully he'll understand.

You'd think that since Paypal can accept a cheque from you, they'd also allow people to lodge money to their bank account. This would be a quicker way to deal with it. Don't suppose that's going to happen though.

Told the buyer the story. He was not understanding and has opened a "not as described" dispute. So in the Paypal resolution center I now have the option to close the dispute by "issuing a full refund to the buyer". If I take this option what happens? Does paypal refund him from my credit card? Does the refund bounce cos I have no funds? Do I get me Ebay fees refunded?

    What a mess.

No idea. You'll just have to try it an see I guess. Your options are very limited here.

You are best to send Paypal a cheque. Even if you had the bank transfer option, it would still take 7 days to appear in your Paypal acocunt.

When your buyer escalates the dispute to a claim (must be within 20 days) you then have 10 days to respond to it. What you should do now is to send a cheque while the claim is waiting for you to respond. The funds should clear and be in your account before your time runs out and then you can choose to refund the buyer.

Other than that, disagree with the claim and wait for the end result. If the buyer has the item he will have to return it to you before a refund is issued. Though if this does happen and you have no funds your balance will be taken negative meaning you will have to send PayPal a cheque anyway

Or alternatively you could give somebody money to send to your account and then refund the buyer that way, but even then you will have to pay to receive money but it's probably the easiest of all the solutions.

Buyer has now escalated to claim. I have sent cheque to Paypal but they have told me that it takes 7 days for cheque to clear once lodged, and it can also take up to five days for cheque to be sorted and sent to the correct department for lodgement once they receive it in the post. Must be very big building! So touch and go as to whether cheque will be in account in time.

Here's an other idea. If I get friend to send me money, presume I'll get hit with the 5.4% fee for receiving. I can then refund buyer and resolve claim. Then when cheque finally clears, if I refund money to friend, will I get the 5.4% fee returned?

You could do that I suppose. You are better off waiting for your cheque to clear though, your claim should still be open at that stage anyway meaning you can contact PayPal to or issue the refund to the buyer yourself.

You will pay fee's to receive a payment from your friend. So they would need to send you more than the original amount for you to refund your buyer. Then when your cheque clears you would need to have what your friend sent you in your account in order to refund that transaction. It's possible but a little awkward.
