Running the Gauntlet

If you want to watch some exciting near misses on pedestrians, go to the junction of Tara St and Burgh Quay at rush hour.

The pedestrians crossing the road to the bridge have no option but to run for it, as the traffic is never halted - it comes up along the quays, or from cars turning left up Burgh Quay.

It is absolutely crazy to say the least.

Is it one of these junctions where there are pedestrian lights for crossing 3 out of the 4 roads but in order to cross the 4th, the pedestrians must either wait at 3 separate lights or make a run for it? I hate those. Even more annoying is where one or both of the intersecting roads is a dual carriageway and each carriageway has a separate pedestrian light meaning the possiblity of waiting at 6 different lights to cross one road (damn Drumcondra road/Griffith avenue junction).

Tara St and Burgh Quay has ped lights for only two of the crossings . Any other poor sod trying either of the other two has been declared by DCC as fair game.

they do have an option they can cross one set towards tara st then the other set across onto the bridge then at the other side of the bridge cross there. it's the same at parliament street, capel street bridge, just because the lights aren't in place mean you have the right to do a runner across an unsafe crossing - it's not an ideal solution but to help traffic including buses to flow freely i think it makes sense.

Yes but if you're going to Abbey St. bus stops or Busaras, you must cross four crossings rather, in reality, two (as one of the roads is rarely used, as it's the left turn at SIPTU which is buses only).

So the majority of pedestrians make a run for it, rather than waiting all night to get their bus.

Worse thing is that people are late makes it even more hairy to watch,as many take serious risks.
