I was in Amsterdam last week and i saw the most beautiful breed of dog around the city. it was larger thant a border collie and scruffy (they were mostly brown in colour). It looks like a bearded collie, but i don't think that is what it is. Any help identifying the breed would be great. I did a google search and can't find anything.

Looks like a Bouvier to me. I lived in Holland for a while and saw plenty of them. There are different colours, but the light brown ones (I think they call them 'blond') are the nicest I think .. like great big cuddly teddy bears of dogs :)

He looks like a briard but the breed looks to big to fit the picture. The bouvier is a bit too short haired to be him. We have a 13 year old border collie who unfortunately wont be with us much longer and we are looking for a dog of similar or bigger size to replace him when he goes (it would be too cruel to introduce a puppy to the household while Georgie is still with us). I have a feeling the dog may be a Schapendoes - a type of dutch sheepdog (after more online searching!)

Could be a Glen Of Imaal terrier, but it looks a bit big.

Bearded collies can be brown as well (besides black or grey) and if the coat isn't full show length they can look quite scruffy

I would say the dog in question is a briard.

Are Bouviers meant to be short haired? Growing up (in Holland) I knew someone with a bouvier and he looked very similar to the dog in your picture. I suppose he could have been a slight mix though.

I was going to say that too. The ones in the pictures I linked to are nicely groomed, but most real-life examples I saw when I lived there were pretty 'shaggy', hence why I suggested it. They're also a pretty common dog over there.

    Cute dog.

He could be a mongrel of sorts... ie a cross breed.
