Is there any rule of thumb for passive cards?

Hello ,I'm in the process of looking at cards for mc.

I was wondering is there any rules or things to look out for ,
i.e the more ram the card has ,the less work the gpu has and therefor the card is cooler ??

Fook it ,I went for this card http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=342781

The fins look like they will cool very easily ,so keeping the card cool properly.
    I hope :(

Theres a good review of the card here , its completely silent and works well , overall a very positive review ,

However it does not have HDMI with sound , just a HDTV ( component ) out , which may be what your looking for , if you do want HDMI with sound there are cards available !

Otherwise a DVI to HDMI works fine , and an extra cable connection will provide sound , no graphics card passes HD audio yet anyway , as none of them are HDMI 1.3 , so theres no real benefit to having the sound over HDMI other than having one less cable.

Thanks for that link mathias ,I'm not pushed about the hdmi thing really.

I decided to go down the route of a basic sony 6.1 system €300 ,so I won't benefit from the hdmi audio qualities.
I might try and through the audio from the pc ,through the sony amp and then to my denon stereo ,for music.

    Cheers.

Edit : After checking the airflow on my machine ,it's not great for passive cards. But the only other option I discovered ,turns out to run very hot.

Nope, GPU does the same work regardless of RAM amount, in fact the opposite could be argued as true. Also, RAM generates heat too. Also bear in mind that some cards with more RAM suffer from poorer peformance as the RAM is cheaper/slower to save costs.

Passive is good, however somthing with a slow and almost silent fan is always better IMO. Theres no reason (other than space!) that you cant have a very low RPM fan running beside your passive cooler if you feel the temps are getting a bit northside.

Thanks soupercomputer ,I will have to wait and see how the new card goes in my machine.

The machine is an inpsiron 530 ,which is very quiet. I took off a pci plate next to my existing card, disconnected the gpu fan power.
I got some really thin strips of tissue and there is absolutely no air movement around the opening.

While I'm waiting for my new card to arrive ,I think I'll investigate where I can plop a really large slow moving fan ,within the case . I think if I was to put something in too strong ,I'd fook up the current airflow.

Would there be any harm in me deviding the space within my machine and create a seperate airflow for the graphics card ?

Is it possible to make up a thermo electric fan ?

Or do fans need too much electricity ?

I got an 8600 gts and put a passive zalman vnf100. it works brilliant but you need good air flow in your case. I tried it with the lid open and the air flow was disrupted. the thing went off the charts heats wise. soon as you close the case and the air flow kicks back in it runs perfect. never goes above 57c.

Some fans have thermistors alright, and some come with controller knobs.

Your motherboard might have support from speedfan, its a software-based fan controller. Works very well, but not all chipset are supported.

I've googled a fair bit ,but after running speedfan I can't understand what the readings are exactly . If I'm pushing the thread too far ,sorry.

    TEMP1 32C
    TEMP2 37C
    TEMP3 -10C
    CORE 0 27C
    CORE 1 28C

When I minimize speedfan ,32 is coming up on the taskbar. So I presume Temp 1 is my CPU ?
