Check out that link. Burma is a country i was looking into traveling to when i'll be in Asia next year. But it doesn't seem to be the easiest country to get in to. The government changes its policy quite frequently and overland travel is quite difficult.

    Hi Danielle,

I was in Burma for a month with my GF last August.
An absolutely amazing country and quiet an experience.

Getting from one place to the next can become a challenge but generally there is a backpacker trail that most follow - Yangon - Kalaw - Inle Lake - Mandalay - Bagan - Yangon or some variation

The people are amazing, we discussed not going as Aung San Suu Kyi asked tourists to stay away - however, the reaction of people when we were there completly put us at ease - we came across alot of people wanting to practise their english and others that could talk about the FA premiership for hours on end :)

The present situation is pretty bleak and while we were there, you were aware of a constant army presence everywhere especially in the cities and when travelling on buses (constant roadblocks, searches etc...)

Cant really advise as to whether you should go asa result of the recent uprising and protests as im also not certain if the Burmese are giving visas anymore?? The safety situation has worsened considerably as the army and the 'volunteers' (loyal party supporters) are on edge or so ive heard so probably wouldnt chance it myself

They (the so-called Govt) announced a refurendum on a new constitution a few weeks back but noone really believes this will be a fair vote or anywhere close to it!! This could potentially cause further protests and and violence like last year

When we were there, it was relatively easy to get a visa - travel agent in Chiang Mai and Airasia flight to Yangon from Bangkok

As Neamh said, overland travel is practically impossible and very unadvisable as there are refugee camps dotted around the Thai/Burmese Border
