I was more of a beano man myself, but used to get the dandy if I couldnt get the beano for whatever reason that week. I must of had hundreds of comics when i was younger. Roger the dodger was my favourite character.
Thinking back in these comic strips the nerds were social outcasts, all the cool kids were trouble makers and rebels, dennis the menace, minnie the minx, the bash street kids. Would they get away with it today?

My brother collected the Dandy and I had the Beano.

Same, my sister had the Dandy and I had the Beano. I'm not really sure which was better, they both had some great strips! Remember the toys that used to come with them?

My mam recently threw out our old collection of beanos and dandys... d'oh.

I used to love when there was a free bar. Some times they were bars you couldnt get in Ireland,oh the excitement! I remember there was a comic buster that I got the odd time, that used to have great toys. Once I got a nail that was hooked so you could make it look like it was going through your finger

My older brother got the beano and i got the dandy, the dandy had bananaman tho! remember then they brought out he bananaman cartoon, and the bars that had the paper wrapping that was incredibly difficult to peel off, so much so that often as i kid i just used to eat the whole thing, paper included....(disgusting but necessary)

Yeah the Beano and Dandy were ok, but when I was reading it (late 80s/early 90s) the whole obsession with English social classes/pre-war dress sense/lingo etc even grated then. 'Buster' kicked both their asses.

Here's a nice BBC 'Arena' documentary on the 'Beano' and 'Dandy':

The Beano and the Dandy were great fun. Being a grrlllll, I used to get the Judy and the Bunty for a few years but I began to like my brother's comics better. Much better to follow the mis-adventures of Dennis the Menace or Desperate Dan than the Four Marys who are probably still repeating their exams for the 50th year running in St Elmo's.

    Dandy > Beano..
    Hard choice though!

Remember that one. You had to pledge your allegiance as either a "Wizz Kid" or a "Chip-ite". Strange. Best thing about those comics was the sound effects:
    Chortle!
    Guffaw!
    Ho Ho!
    Snigger!

Remember Warlord and Battle comics? Lots of WW1 cockney soldier types slaying German antichrists, and they'd be shouting "AAiiiieeee! I kill you Tommy!" or "Lumme! Jerry's got a flippin' grenade!"
