Importation for conversion

Is it possible to import a van and convert it to a motorcaravan before registering it for vrt?

I'm thinking specifically of something like a Mazda Bongo.

Also would there be any issues with a pop-up roof and minimum interior height re. vrt? There seem to be a few threads (and a sticky) which cast doubt on pop-ups. Surely if there are existing Bongo's / similar registered as motorcaravans they would be allowed?

The only people that can answer that question with any degree of certainty are your local VRO officers.

Just go there, show them some pics and explain what you want to do. In case you do get a positive answer, make sure totake their name so that they stand by their word when you come back weeks later (and thousands poorer) with the vehicle in question for assessment.

So am I right is saying you register for VRT at whatever stage you like as long as the vehicle isn't on the road prior to this happening?

    Thanks for the advice

    emmm ...not quite ....

Theoretically (and by law) you're supposed to register any imported vehicle on the next working day following importation.

And then re-register it / get it re-classified, once you've converted it.

Doesn't matter if it's on or off the road inbetween.

Not really a viable option then, importing and then converting if you have to pay 30% VRT to start with.

    May have to rethink this.....

you would do well to do as peasant says and talk to the vro. If they allow the pop up as a camper (ie 1.8m of headroom) then your vrt is 13.5%. to import and vrt as a van prior to this is €50.
getting the van in is easy, post conversion is the problem. also by law you are supposed to register it / present for vrt the next working day, in practice this rarely happens but it is a risk you take !
