I'm looking to make sure my new build is as quiet as possible.

I'm looking to spend roughly 1200-1500

can anyone recomend any hardware or general advice for making it as silent as possible, it's a deal breaker for the gf if she can hear it's gone :p

first off , a passively cooled graphics card , no fan , either an 8500/8600 from nividia or a 2400/2600 from Ati ,

Second , dont use the stock cooler on the processor , get a cooler that runs at 17-19 dba.

Likewise with the power supply , 17-19 dba , 120mm fans are a must , the smaller they are the more noise they make.

Accept no other fans in the system , get a motherboard with no chipset fan , only passively cooled chipsets .

The case is important , Antec , Zalman , Silverstone et al. make some very nice and " quiet " cases in the sense that the cases are compartmentalised and reduce resonant noise , also the hard drive caddys should have rubber grommets for the screws which dampen vibration.

I put mine together with a Zalman 160 case , and passively cooled 8600 , a 17 DBA power supply and a Zalman cooler , it has four 500GB samsungs in there and with the noise dampeners that were supplied with the case they are whisper quiet , the whole thing runs very very silent.

It can be done. Just carefully select your parts.
1200 is a very generous budget for a HTPC , you should be able to do it no problem.

I left out something that might be very important, I want it all in a shuttle case.

    Am I asking for miracles?

Any recommendations on quite HDD's? 500GB mark?

Shuttle cases are entirely possible , try and get the type with the heat pipe cooler to the fan on the back , they are very quiet. I think this is one ,

The onboard graphics in this has a HDMI slot , not sure on the performance side of things but it has a PCIe slot if that doesnt work out.

Samsung a quiet hard drives , as quiet as they get anyway , fit grommets around the mounting screws to absorb vibration and they will be fine.

    cheers for all that

    one more question

what board did you use to get the gfx and the tuner in?

most of the boards I've looked at only have two pci-e slots which the gfx take up when passive
