Laptop Issue

    Hi,

Writing this on behalf of a friend so don't have details of model etc but its a general issue -

Basically, due to a bout of impatience the laptop was manually shut down by holding the power button for several seconds. On the following startup it was basically the blue screen of death which only lasts 1-2 seconds and the laptop turns off again (ie not enough time to catch the onscreen error message)

So, we have tried booting in Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuation & also a repair attempt with Windows XP disc - all the previously mentioned have failed.

Anyone got any other ideas, we have attempted all these options multiple times but still get the same outcome. Have we got an oversized paper weight on our hands or does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

If we had the error from that blue screen then we would have something to go on. Otherwise all we have is guess-work. Killing power to the laptop can screw up the hard drive, so maybe that is the problem. What happens when you try to boot into safe mode?

Try running a hard disk diagnostics to ensure hard disk is still ok... Could be the disk got damaged...

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back so soon, as I posted on someone elses behalf it'll be tomorrow before I will talk to them again so I'll suggest the photo idea. As regards Safe Mode etc my understanding is that it keeps cutting out no matter what is attempted - it does not respond to anything for more than a few seconds.

I forgot to mention that the laptop is about four years old, don't know if that is a contributing factor or not as regards laptop hard-disk life expectency..?

    Thanks again

if it wont let you do anything not even get into safe mode and its more or less instant then im afriad it looks like the harddrive went kaput.

    well done :D

dont worry we've all been there before.....
countless hardware thrown around, punched, kicked all over my short temper :)

When the Safe Mode menu is listed is there an option to Disable automatic Reboot on Error (or something like that) should basically stop your machine rebooting and just sit at the bluescreen to allow you to read the Stop 0x00.. number and from that you can google it and see what it leads too. My guess, "unmountable boot volume" due to an issue with your hard drive.

Apols, only got the code now:

    0X000000ED (0X85396030, 0XC000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Can't locate any details on the net - anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers

My friend did something similar, basically his laptop battery holds no charge, the charger was out and it died, badly. It would try and boot up but it was missing a file. Basically the computer crashed in its hibernation mode. Windows was hung when it crashed.

Not really a fix here but a somewhat solution, boot up with a bootable CD, Ubuntu or the likes and copy any necessary files off. Then.... format and reinstall windows. Not even a bad idea for old PCs. Clear out any old crap.
If windows hasnt shutdown properly then the hard drive may not be accessible so this might not work. If so, install another windows operation system so you can boot up, and copy files. Then format and reinstall windows.

Firstly id try simple things, get a windows install CD, boot from the CD and try the repair option.

    Try bootable CDs.

If i think of anything else ill let ya know.

If attempting the repair option make sure when you boot from cd that you do not attempt the repair option at first sight.

Select Install XP and when the boot cd searches and finds a current installation then select repair.
