Printing black only with Epson DX6050

Just wondering if someone can help me here.. in the showroom when I bought my Epson Stylys DX6050 the guy told me it has 4 separate print cartridges and they don't all need to be full to print.. so I have 3 cartridges full at the moment and one empty and am trying to print black only and it won't work.. does anyone know…
