Problem sending email with Outlook Express

I have an intermittent problem with Outlook Express not sending my emails. I'm using Internet Explorer 7.0 and every so often when I try to send an email I get this message. It happens with new emails recipients and email addresses I send to regularly.

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'p*****@eircom.net' Subject 'Auction', Account: 'mail1.eircom.net (1)', Server: 'mail1.eircom.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=78.16.204.3', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

This is very frustrating, often the next day its fine and I can send emails again without me doing anything differently. It doesn't affect my ability to accept emails to my accounts, just sending.

Any ideas, I've tried turning my Windows firewall off and it makes no difference.

    Thanks

Try changing the Eircom outgoing mail server to mail2.eircom.net (Tools>Accounts in outlook express iirc), that may help...

You need to follow the spamhaus link and the next link
    http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/query/PBL186590
This will explain what the problem is and offer a fix.

I clicked on the link, it says I needed to "turn on SMTP Authentication" and I followed this information.

If you do not have SMTP Authentication turned on in your email software (Outlook, Entourage, Eudora, Apple Mail, etc.) you run the risk that the mail server will not recognize that you are a legitimate customer.

If the mail server is using spam filters (such as Spamhaus' PBL or XBL) it may refuse to take your email, because it thinks you are a stranger and your dynamic IP address is probably on Spamhaus' PBL list of dynamic IP addresses which mail servers should not accept mail from unless the sender is authorized to use that mail server.

To fix this, you need to turn on "SMTP Authentication", here's how:
In Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express:

Start Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express. From the menu, select Tools, then Accounts. Click once on the appropriate account from the Mail tab. Select Properties. From the account properties dialog box, choose the Servers tab. Put a check in the box for "My server requires authentication". Click on the "Settings" button. In the 'Outgoing Mail Server' dialog box, make sure "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected. Press "OK". Back at the "Properties", click "Apply", then "OK". Click "OK" to close out of all dialog boxes.

I have done this exactly as it states but still I can't send any emails. It is very frustrating as I run my own business and am having to use an 02.ie account that isn't routed through Outlook Express to send emails.

Anything else I could do? When I had the problem before it used to "sort itself out" after a day or so without me physically doing anything?

    Who is your ISP?

Eircom email is borked alot lately and it's getting more frequent.

Setup a new gmail email address and set it to retrieve your Eircom emails aswell.

My email addys are both eircom.net but I pay the bill to BT so I guess they are the ISP, sorry for being vague, for someone who runs her own business I'm not so great on the technical side of computers.

However, the problem seems to have solved itself again as of 20 mins ago, I just sent a couple of emails and they went straight away?

I know I could just use the eircom website to collect emails but I store sent emails in so many folders as I'm a trading assitant on Ebay as well as everything else so its a complete pain in the ass when it won't work.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, much appreciated x

yeah I was just going to ask aswell, had you changed ISP recently - but having an Eircom email address on a BT connection would explain a lot of the problem.

If you look on the Esat BT/IOL site there is an Outlook Express tutorial on how to setup an Eircom address on a BT connection:
"FAQ: Can I use my Eircom Email address on a BT Internet connection?"
    http://www.iol.ie/~support/OE/EircomOE/OE_Eircom.html

So, basically you need to change your Outgoing/SMTP Server to: mail.iol.ie

Loveless is obviously has the same idea as myself. Often ISP's set rules on their mail servers to stop them being used as mail relays by spammers. One of these rules is that only people connecting to the ISP mail server from an IP address assigned by the ISP can send mail. So if you're with BT, you might not be able to send email via the Eircom mail server. But you will through the BT server, even with an Eircom email address.

Another anti spam measure is that people have to authenticate before sending. Sometimes this means using a username and password, other times it means connecting to the incoming server before trying to send mail on the outgoing server.

So it's possible both of these rules are having an effect. Switching to BT SMTP server should solve it.

    Hope that makes sense!

Do as yoyo says but change to the following

    Incoming mail (POP3) = mail1.eircom.net

    Outgoing mail (SMTP) = mail.iol.ie

Its called SMTP blocking (i think) most ISP's do it, you can receive mail fine but when sending you have to send it via their servers despite who the mail account is provided by, with the exception of a few, GMail is one i think.

Brilliant, you are my saviour lol, it had been sending emails fine all day then suddenly stopped again about 3pm, I was tearing my hair out. Another poster suggested opening a Gmail account but I have a multitude of folders and subfolders on OE I have to refer to on a daily basis so it doesn't bear thinking about unless I could import all that information.

I just did what you suggested about the outgoing server and its working fine. I have kept the "authentication" box ticked still. Fingers crossed its OK now.

By the way could I just ask is there any way of "backing up" folders I use on OE? I do keep written records of websites my business is registered with/advertises on etc and I print out my OE address book now and then but I had my motherboard pack up a couple of years ago and it would be useful to know if I can "copy" the folders anywhere else in case of emergency.

Thank you again for all the help.
