Nokia N96 and DVB-H

Loads of net footage of the N96 debuted at WOM and interestingly it has DVB-H for mobile TV broadcasts. Not the first time Nokia has released a DVB-H phone but the N96 (like the N95) should do a lot more mainstream sales possibly prompting a speeding up of the DVB-H broadcasts in Ireland..
A quick google to see if DVB-H was imminent for Ireland led me to this page:
    http://www.dvb.org/about_dvb/dvb_worldwide/ireland/index.xml

Read the last line of first paragraph..
"ComReg is expected to open a consultation on mobile television licence conditions in the first half of 2008."

    Mad..

Yep we don't even have a proper terrestrial digital TV system yet (it's been "trialled" just like it has for years now) so I wouldn't count on seeing mobile TV transmissions anytime soon.

As usual anything that requires regulators to actually do their job gets left undone or until it's too late.

    Wouldn't hold my breath.
Extremely frustrating to think that such cool tech may lie redundant on devices like this because of such a shabby attitude.

yes, chances of it coming to fruitition are very slim.. what annoyed me is the fact that ComReg are opening a "consultation on mobile television licence conditions in the first half of 2008". I read that like there is a possibilty that an end user may need to purchase a TV licence (most likely with a phone purchase) at some point if the DVB-H comes on stream... or am I reading that incorrectly? Last time I bought a computer with a TV tuner in it for example I had to sign a form for ze TV licence inspector which p1ssed me off no end..

Could be something like that- I vaguely remember reading something similar about tv licenses with sales of such phones in the future.
God that laptop tv license thing would rightly pi$$ me off as well though.

As you said, it's not Nokia's first DVB-H phone, they have the N77 as well. Someone I know who works in Arqiva (the company who installed the transmission equipment) had one and gave me a go, seems pretty good.

I got to be part of the trail for the Nokia N92. The television was pretty good on it. And from the survey they asked afterwards, it didn't seem like they were going to charge an arm and a leg for it either. However, the choice of channels wasn't great in my opinion but then again i don't watch much sports on tv. You got setanta, sky sports one and sky sports news.
