Weird speaker noise

Right, I consider myself reasonably computer literate, so this is a bit embarrassing to ask.
I recently bought a dell XPS M1530, and every so often, I hear a soft noise from the speakers. I would describe it as sounding like three ascending or descending notes from a base guitar (there are two different noises). I hear this maybe once every half hour.
The funny thing is, it happens under both windows and linux, so I figure it's a hardware thing.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I'm sure I'm overlooking something trivial, but this kind of thing annoys me a bit.

Just thought of a better way to describe the noise: it sounds like what you hear when you add or remove USB hardware under XP, but with three notes instead of two.

Pretty sure it's my new IM client (Pidgin).
I'm running it on both OS's, so that would explain it.
My god, that was irritating for a while.

Had a smiliar issue myself ,would get a loud (I mean LOUD!) beep from my laptops internal speaker completely at random. After much agro trying to find out waht it was, it was whenever I got an email in Outlook, because the default sound file for "You've got mail" was gone or corrupt it resorted to a loud monotone BEEP!
    Glad you sorted it out!

Yah... I managed to embarrass myself by sending an e-mail to dell tech support first, though :o
(they still haven't gotten back to me)
