New turntable, or not?

Hey guys, I'm looking to record LPs onto mp3.
I have an old Technics SL-BD26 here, I think it needs a new needle and cartridge, as it's old, and looks damaged.
Would I be better off buying a new turntable, or just a needle and cartridge for this?
Anyone tried those USB turntables, they look fairly crap. Big plastic-y Ion ones, seem to get decent reviews though.

a decent cart & stylus will cost as much, if not more, than one of those USB decks and you'll have to have an amp for the Technics as well... assuming you have a sound card that can accept a connection from the amp in the first place.

The USB deck may not be hifi but it will be as good as a technics/amp/soundcard solution and far easier to use. Audacity usually comes free with those decks (it's freeware anyway) and will do the job of separating tracks or editing with little fuss.

Cheers slaphead, I ended up getting a new Sony turntable for very cheap, it has a preamp built in.
Any recommendation for what soundcard to get? All I have is a laptop, so it would have to be USB. Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX USB 24Bit External Sound Card looks decent?

I know very little about soundcards I'm afraid. Someone else may be able to help.
