    I didn't want to hijack Paddyblue's thread on HRV but was interested in SSE's comments that you would do a number of things differently.
    Any chance you could list these things ?

    I know every house design is different but it might just twig a need to look at the design one last time BEFORE we start digging ( Change of house type planning application lodged yesterday)

    Cheers,

    D

    hi metalscrubber

    Looking back, I think the main things that caused us angst during the build were a) wasting far too much time and effort on dead ends such as getting quotes for heat pumps, pellet stoves, boreholes, imported windows etc. and
    b) the late decision to add insulated plasterboard to external walls.

    Issue a) was just a waste of time and caused a loss of focus. By all means investigate and take the advice of people who've been down the road but, frankly, if something feels wrong to start with it'll probably stay that way. Issue b) was purely a question of timing, causing complexities with sockets etc. Mind you I'm glad we did the extra work.

    There's probably a bigger list of things we'd do exactly the same or even more so:
    * upped the spec on the windows
    * loads of glazing facing South
    * HRV
    * CAT 5e everywhere
    * insulate, insulate, insulate.....
    * pressurized plumbing
