Well I'm thinking about buying a new laptop and love the look of mac books. Can anyone recommend somewhere to pick one up slightly cheaper than the Apple store??
Do Apple have an outlet store like Dell???

    Thanks for any help. :)

They're not usually much cheaper elsewhere from what i have seen. You could try the refurb section on the AppleStore you can get some great value there.

It's nearly always better to buy a Mac on the apple store, you're much more likely to get an up to date model. Stores like O2 etc. might not have the most current models/configurations/prices.

I'll do one up if you like. I like to think I know enough about Mac to do it without getting too over techie, unless anybody else would care to :)

Sounds good to me Ham! If you get one started, people can add to it and I'll sticky it, the refs threads here are handy so no harm in another one.

just bringing this thread back to life, just wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of refurbished laptops?

Advantages: To all intents and purposes, it's a new laptop at a reduced price. Clean OS install, certified 'as new' by Apple, full one year warranty.

Disadvantages: It may not be the latest model, you can't customise it the way you want to, that niggling feeling that it's not brand new ;)

There's a business in galway who have the license for selling apple mac's (and its not an apple shop). I was told that if you went in there and told them you were working in the university, they would give you an educational discount. I did...and got 25% off......happy days!!!!!

Don't know if this goes on in the rest of the country but could be worth a try!

ace breezer, that sums it up really. But how about the internal hardware? would the motherboard and all that be new? And what about the chassis?

Basically units that end up in the refurb store are cancelled orders or units returned under Apple's 16 day (I think) money back guarantee. The components aren't new (unless the originals were faulty to begin with) but are certified 'as new' - in other words, they may as well be because they work and look just as well. They're given the same warranty as new components.
