I bought a 1980 golf project recently and it has the original log book. The car has passed through a number of different owners over the years without updating the log book because it needs some work and therefore it wasn't used on the roads since 2000. How do I get registered on the log book without the current registered owners signature. Will the Tax office require a garda signature or something?
    Has anyone any suggestions?

Anytime that iv done this, iv just filled out the change of ownership form with the last owners details in the tax book and my own and its been good enough for the tax office. The owners in between wont matter because they werent using the car on the road.
Then when you want to re tax when its ready for the road it the guards will have to stamp a form to declare it was off the road for however long, but thats just a formality really.
All forms should be availible in your local motor tax office, i cant remember offhand what their codes are.You shouldnt have any problems. Good luck with the project!!:)

I had to do this about a year ago as my car hadn't been on the road for years.
The procedure requested by the tax office was as follows,

Get a letter from a garage stating that the actual chassis no. on the car matches that on the log book, In practise this just meant going to a mate of mine in a Volvo main dealers and getting him to stamp my own one liner note.

Get a commissioner for oaths to witness me signing a form (provided by the motor tax office) stating that I was the owner of the vehicle. A commissioner for oaths is basically a solicitor and most solicitors offices can perform this service. They do it every day for various different situations and charge about a tenner.

And lastly, as stated in the last post, go to the police station and get a form stamped stating that the car has not been in use.

I wish I'd just filled in the log book as carchaeologist said but I made the mistake of asking them first:)
