Civil Service Summer Jobs

I just have a few questions about possibly getting one for myself this summer.

I've 5 months of summer this year form May 'til October, anybody know how long the temp positions are typically for??

Reading the links supplied, I assume this is where to apply to? http://www.publicjobs.ie/cand/JobDetails_eng.asp?JobID=2983&hdnGUID=&hdnJobID=1901&sgDest=JOBLISTING

If not, when do they go on offer?? I've did a search and saw at least 2 reponses here, one said early Feb, the other said mid-march. I assume it'll be on publicjobs.ie?

    What's the money like?? I assume it's a 9 to 5 job?

Can you pick the department you'd like to work in, or is it the luck of the draw?

Finally, with a 1.1 in first year, 2.1 in second and a 1.1 from semester one in the final year of my degree (Accounting and HRM) am I likely to get a job if I apply?

Many thanks to anyone who can help out!!

i think if you're going to be serious about applying for this job you should read all the material on the link you supplied, the page alone states the closing date, salary and provides a link to the information booklet...

afaik they conduct interviews April/May, dunno when you get notice if you've been accepted for an interview. if you get the position you are assigned a department

about actually getting the job, it's competitive and from what i've been told by people who work in the CS is that their selection process for these jobs can be very unpredictable, for example you can qualifications, degrees and previous work experience flowing of your arse and you won't get as far as the interview stage while the college drop outs who have spent the last year on the dole doing nothing get snapped up like no tomorrow, maybe they go the lucky dip route? in other words nothing is guaranteed so don't get your hopes up

Degrees are worthless for Civil Service summer jobs - only needed for permanent jobs through open competitions e.g. EO/Trainee Auditor/AO.

Haha I actually read it about 5 mins after I posted the topic (I was typing up the topic and decided I should at least double check to make sure I didn't miss the offer, that's when I saw the link I supplied).

There were a few questions the book didn't cover so I decided to start the thread anyway!!

As for the selection process, seems really inefficent if that's how they do it. Shouldn't come as too much of a shock, all things considered tho!! :D

I got my interview letter in mid-April last year, had the interview in mid-May, got the offers about two weeks later.

For the temp jobs your degree doesn't really matter. I thought the interviews were fine, in both instances they were with two people and ran the usual 'give us an example of where...' thing. Afterwards one of them sent me a copy of my interview score which I'd never had before.

Generally 8 or 13 week contracts.

You can choose the region. That's it.

They don't even ask for this on the questionnaire so it has no bearing. You're scored based on your questionnaire answers, which only the PAS know how it works.
