Hey all, As the iPhone currently uses edge wondering who would be the best network to go with.

As i previously understood it. Voda had a 'faux' edge network, basically an enhanced GPRS? But seemingly 02 has a propper updated (like AT&T) edge. Anyone any idea?

Vodafone 500Mb data prepay contract is only €10 extra while 02's 25Mb is €25 or something like that. Big difference in price.

    Thanks in advance
    Grif

EDGE is just enhanced GPRS.. the technology is almost identical. afaik, o2 has the widest edge coverage and vodafone are more geared towards 3g

the Vodafone 'Mobile Internet' is their Live! service, it won't operate on the iPhone unless you modify the system further with specific proxy info, this then enables you to only use the Browser for data...

you need to use their ISP services: see Pre-Pay Other Costs: Data Services (Scroll to end of page) to make use of all the data services of the devices but at 2c per 1KB...

Pretty sure it's isp.vodafone.ie i'm using without any problems, except speed of course.

Just to make sure you know: The 500MB data bundle only applies using the Live apn, not the ISP apn.

yup ISP works grand, except for the cost... double check you bill or your credit... unless they've messed up billing you properly...

02 have changed their data packages for bill pay customers. I have added the €7.50 a month 250 MB data package and using APN - "internet" username - blank - Password Blank.

It works great and I think you would struggle to do over 250 MB per month

I am delighted with it and my iPhone :D

OK so that sounds like it could be a winner. I presume you didn't have to hack the edge proxy settings?

No I unlocked it using ziphone. Instructions can be found here
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=675

Then when I put my new sim card in I went to Settings > General > Network > Edge

    APN - Internet
    Username - left blank
    Password - left blank

Working within 2 mins of taking contract with data add on. ;)

OK all done on 02 now and i even get my little 'E' icon. Speed is definitely faster than what i was getting on Voda. Sweet!

One Q, anyone know off-hand what o2's smtp server settings are?
