Does anyone know can this be used to copy programs from the box onto a hard drive or something like that? Or is it just used for diagnostic stuff if engineers call out?

If you can copy stuff to hard drives what format are the programs in?

I believe it cant be used to copy stuff from the HD. I'm sure I read somewhere its there as a "just in case" sceanario, if they want to add some-extra functionality.
