A proper bike jacket. Preferably with armour. Youll see the benefit of having the correct gear the first time youre out in horrible weather, without even thinking of the protection you need in an accident.

Helmet, gloves, some decent ankle boots cordura/leather jacket. First time it rains you'll want trousers too. Leathers will protect you but you'll look like a power ranger gone wrong. At the end of the day it's your skin. No point buying gear if you're not willing to use it while riding.

PS the only scars I have are from coming off a bicycle at 30km in town a few years ago. Ripped my clothes to shreds so I can't imagine coming off at 50km without some protection other than jeans.

Lidl & Aldi sell bike gear on specials suitable for mopeds and scooters, expect them on offer in the coming weeks when the weather improves.

Ok for scooters and mopeds that buzz along at 30MPH but certainly not on a motorbike!

If they have the UK and TUV marks, they would be sufficient, though there might be better.

What about when the scooter gets creamed by a car doing 50mph ?? Cheap helmets are great if you have a cheap head.

I would advice wearing the following:

    - Excellent Helmet (Arai, AGV, Nitro, Shark) - how much is your head worth?
    - Proper Jacket (Richa, Alpinestar)
    - Proper Armored Gloves (again, Richa, Alpinestar)
    - Proper Boots (Oxtar, Alpinestar)
    - Good jeans with waterproof leggings

That's what I wear on my bike every day. Might sound like overkill on a scooter but your chances of getting seriously injured on a scooter are as high (if not higher) as getting hurt on a bigger bike.

As for the jeans: I have proper Richa motorcycle (armored) trousers that zip with my jacket but I decided that it would be too much hassle on a daily basis... I only wear them at the week-end or on long trips.

    Hope this helps!

I wouldn't get a cheap lid but the jackets, trousers, gloves and boots are fine. I also use an Aldi back protector & kidney belt. Boots are a bit uncomfortable on along run but provide plenty of protection. For a commute on a scooter it is fine.

have to agree - get as much good gear as you can - my two offs in 4 years have both been at low speed (latest one at 15kph). The most recent one ripped one of my Oxtar €200 boots when my leg got trapped under bike and I had a really banged up ankle for approx 1 week.(hate to see what my leg/foot would have been like with nikes on!).
First accident - I was on a 125cc scooter (35 kph) with set of Richa Cordura jacket/pants and good boots etc and ripped gloves/sleeve of jacket.

I wouldnt be seen dead wearing any other lid than a branded one such as Arai, AGV, Shark, Nolan or Showi and at that I would insist on the Double "D" chin strap used on top brands. If you service your bike do you fill it with the cheapest oil availible?, likewise why compromise for the cheepest lid to save your skull. I wouldn't trust many of these unbranded supermarket helmets if they were to save me from falling out of bed!! They do have their uses, i.e. scate boarders and push bikers :D

Which means that in both accidents the gear did its job and enabled you to walk away with minor "injuries" as opposed to being transported to hospital by ambulance! That's why I believe it's important to invest in proper safety gear.

And if money is an issue, PM me spinandscribble and I'll put you in contact with somebody who only sells very very good gear (Richa, Oxtar, Shark, etc) at a very very low price (so low he has no competition IMO)!

He showed me a pair of Richa racing gloves he had for sale at €120 EUR and he told me that the same pair in BikeWorld cost €300+ EUR! Crazy!

i agree - that's my point. I now wear a richa leather suit that cost more than my first bike !

The price of a pair of Richa gloves would cover of an entire kit from Aldi ie Gloves, Jacket, Lid, Jeans etc.

Preferably If I was riding a scooter I would wear a full face lid and tinted visor because there would be less chance of anyone seen me on it !! :D
