Paulaner

I ordered this beer a while ago in Ireland, in the bar in the Dundrum Shopping centre, and was given a delicious pint of Weiss beer. It was delicious.

A few weeks ago, I saw it for sale in a pub in England, so decided to order it. And I was handed a pint of lager.
I told the bartender I ordered Paulaner, which he insisted it was. I said that Paulaner is cloudy in colour and tastes completely different.
He called over the bar manager, who said that he'd sold Paulaner for 2 years, and it had always been a lager.

I couldn't really argue with that, so I just drank it anyway. It wasn't too bad. But I still didn't really believe him.

So I'm in a different pub last night, and I see they too have Paulaner on draught. The guy before me at the bar orders a pint, and I see that it is a lager there too.

So what's the deal? Did I get a different beer in Dundrum? Whatever I got, it was definatly a weiss, and not Erdinger or Hoegaarden.
Are there two different types of Paulaner? Neither of them said "Paulaner Lager" or "Paulaner Weiss" on the taps. They both said merely "Paulaner".

What is Paulaner? Lager or Weiss? Google is no help to me on this one.

Paulaner is the name of the brewery and they makes lots of different beers. Wikipedia counts 17.

That's like ordering a Ford and getting a fiesta in one garage and a focus in another.

You're right though, I've seen tap handles with a vague "Paulaner" badge on it.

I got it there too, lovely stuff, and reasonable price. nice glass.

I have seen it elsewhere in Ireland and it has always been the weiss stuff on draught.

Great beer. Pity bout the hangovers!

That is strange. Could it have been a crystal form of the wheat beer in which the yeast has been filtered? If the barman hadn't bothered tasting it, it would ceratinly pass for a lager.

I drank Paulaner beer on tap in Nesbitts on Baggott St a couple of weeks ago, and it was definitely the weissbier.

From the top of my head Paulaner Brewery brew:
    -Weissbier
    -Helles (Lager)
    -Lo Alcohol Helles
    -Pils
-Diet Pils (>4% Alc but lower in calories)
-Salvator Lenten Strong Beer - >6% Alc - sweet sickenly stuff specially brewed by the monks to get themselves through lent without needing too much in the way of food! The Strong Beer Fest starts this week (thursday actually!) at the Paulaner Brewery cellar at Knockerberg. The opening ceremony is televised germany wide, and from the paper today its aparantly watched by over 2.5 million people, which for an afternoon show isnt too bad!!!

Without doing any googling, I am also pretty sure that they do low and non alcohol Weissbier.
They also do a "kellerbier"- cellar beer - which is an unfiltered helles, and you can only get this at the HQ at the Beerhall at the brewery.

So anyhow. You can see that "Paulaner" is much more than just a brand name for a Weissbier.

Just try the strongbeer. That just redefines the whole concept of a hangover.

The Weissbeer has been launched over here, so that's typically what you see around the place. When I was in northern Italy a while back their lagers/pils style beer was common enough. As BeerNut says, they make different styles of beer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

    Yeah, that's what I thought.
Just a bit strange that both places merely said "Paulaner" on the tap.

And it was definately a lager, not a filtered Weiss.

Yea it would be easy to spot a filtered Weiss over a lager

If the distributor is only pushing one variety then they wouldn't want to confuse punters by adding the style to the product's name: draught beer rarely includes this information in the title. AFAIK, Heineken don't have the same sort of clout in the UK as they do here, so the UK Paulaner Helles draught is probably distributed by someone else. Multinationals are usually quick to jump on these sorts of inconsistencies.

I have tried Paulaner helles many times at Oktoberfest Munich before they decided to release the Weissbier version here. IMHO, whilst the weiss is tasty, it hasn't a patch on either the Original Munchner Hell or the Oktoberfest Hell which packs a real punch at 6% abv. I'm over to Munich at a stag this coming weekend and will be paying a visit to the Nockherberg. Needless to say, the Hofbrauhaus, Weisses Brauhaus and possibly Andechs will be on the shopping list!!

Munchkin - I think I'll try some of that Monastic Lenten beer at the Nockherberg ;) Is that strong beer fest still on??

I'm afraid this is probably true. Shame really - Paulaner lager rocks. Come to think of it, we don't really get any Munich lagers on tap here, yet we have Erdinger and Paulaner weiss on tap. Weissbier is not to everyone's taste and is difficult to drink in larger quantities.

They would compete to much with the yellow fizzy stuff that on that here:rolleyes:

The last thing the Irish market needs is another pale lager. Yawn.

Heineken owns the Paulaner brewery so they're using the Heineken's sales and distribution network to promote some of the different Paulaner beers.
That's why we're starting to see it more and more around Ireland and the UK.
Erdinger is quite a big seller here in Ireland, which is probably why Heineken are promoting Paulaner Weissbier over here instead of their Helles.

Big push on with Paulaner at the mo,with Erdinger being targetted in the on trade, publicans being offered 30 free kegs to throw out Erdinger and rebates being offered on all heineken products,

jesus, that sounds like a nice offer, and while paulaner weiss is to me a better beer than erdinger, erdinger has a special place in my heart as my first introduction to proper beer

You can't miss it: Heineken have been giving out awnings, menu boards and those outdoor seating area screens like they're going out of fashion. If there's draught Paulaner inside this will probably be very clear from the street.

How much is the draught Paulaner going for in Dublin then?

If I remember right, I was paying 5.50 for Franziskaner and Spaten in bottles a couple of years ago in a pub.

€4 for 2 bottles of Paulaner (weiss) in Supervalu, Togher, Cork at the moment. Possibly in other branches too?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Had a free pint of Pullaner Wissbier on promotion.
I thought it tasted like soggy bread, awful flat stuff.
It's ok from a bottle, though

I had a few bottles of Paulander (the coudy one) in the Prince bar in Athlone at the weekend. Not bad stuff, similar to the cloudy Erdinger.

I was at the German/Irish Oktoberfest in Croke Park last year, sponsored by Paulaner - nothing but Paulaner (weiss) on draught. That was my introduction, and there's no going back. Has a bit more flavour than Erdinger IMO. It's okay out of a bottle, but nicer on draught.

Each to their own , I guess.
Maybe I just got a very poor draught pint.

Yes, but I think it's corporate only, I don't think tickets are on general sale. Although that may change. I only got in cos I was in the band :D

just after having my first pint of the stuff tonight. have it on draught in the kings head in galway. it's the weis bier and it is surprisingly good. sweeter than erdinger. i am drinking bottle of erdinger now and am not sure which i prefer.

As a guinness drinker, I tend to ditch the black stuff over the summer for a light lager.
Used to drink Heineken and Carlsberg, but am sick of them. Too gassy and hate them.
Would usually hit bottles of Corona, or Milller to a less extent.
Tried Becks Bier, but thought nothing of it.
Used to go on Hoegarden white (and loved it) but just got sick of it.

Tried Paulaner Weiss (on draught) for the first time this weekend.... WOW!!! First time I've actually went 'WOW!' at a new beer. So refreshing and a lovely taste. Dare I say, I've never actually properly enjoyed a beer until now.
Great to hear it's becoming more and more popular. Like the way I don't feel the need to gulp down pints of it... more a few nice ones to savour and enjoy.

One of my mates that's worked in pubs in Germany and lived in Bavaria for a year assures me that Weiss beers should never be served on draught. Back in the motherland they're only sold from the bottle apparently. So Draught Paulaner over here is just a bastardisation dreamed up by the marketing people to make it suit the local market conditions here.

I didn't intend my post to sound like such a rant! But the tone just seems to have worked that way.:D

The is a problem with kegs as you cant get the carbonation levels compared with bottles, as style such as Hefe's and Belgian are better with higher carbonation. An hence why in the native countries they tend to preferred to be served from the bottle. Also bottle can be naturally condition and i am not sure if that done for commercial kegged wheat beers.
