Disc Drive problem on new laptop

    Hi all,

Excuse me for gatecrashing with a quick and probably embarrassing problem, but needs solving none the less...

Bought new laptop yesterday, Acer travelmate, but went to upload photos from CDs to the hard drive, only for it to misread a lof ot the discs. The weird thing is that it is reading the folders correctly, it's just displaying them as empty. Have tried them on a friend's (non-laptop) machine and they worked fine, contents included.

I managed to copy most of them onto a rather small flash drive, but for future reference, what's cuausing my laptop to not pick up the contents? Tried vista help which was (unsurprisingly) no help. I'm guessing newer machine, older discs (standard 52x CD-R) but would think it should still read them.

    Any adivce? Greatly appreactied!

    Thanks.

    P.

Strange, in the last two weeks I've had Acer laptops failing to read CDs.

I wonder do they have dodgy optical drives.

I would bring it back to be honest

Sod that; I can work around it! Works fine in every other way - Plays DVDs, records ok... I thought it was just down to the settings of the drive

Why would you "work around it". It's Brand New. It's not doing what it is supposed to .... bring it back!

Beacuse I'll be using it pretty excessively over the weekend, won;t get back to the shop until Wednesdy and I was convinced it was somethign simple.

I'll ring Acer in the UK over the weekend / on Monday and see what they have to say.

Yeah sure you can take it back for a while whenever suits but don't leave it go. To be honest go straight to the store and leave them handle Acers problems, you will only end up using your warrenty when you shouldn't have to as the product was problematic to begin with.

    It got weirder.

My pc - continues to show discs as full, but empty folders.
    Wrk pc - blank discs
    Internet cafe - blank discs
Mates PC #1 - same as my laptop!
Mates PC #2 - show's files, downloading on flash as we speak.

Don't think bringing it back would achieve anything as it's not unique..? Oh, well sorted in the end. Thanks again for helping anyway.

The files wouldn't be hidden by any chance?

Did you finalise the disc, what burning software did you use to record it? Could be simply the drive didnt close the session and new one is confused, Its weird it registers folders are there though...

Not suer, to be honest, was at least a year ago. There wasn't any software, just copy/sent to/E Drive. I think it probably is something to do with not closing the session, but no idea what - how do you "un-close" a disc from a different machine...?!

I know certain burner software has the option to close discs sessions on any cd in a drive, In Roxio there is a tool called "Finalise Disc", btw doing what your doing copying files on a m8s pc to usb is prob best thing, windows internal burner is well dodgy and I'm not suprised its having issiues, I think copying all manually to usb is the best solution, I can't gurantee finalising will help you at this stage although it should...
