Dodgy Keyboard/Trackpad on Laptop

Just a quick one. Someone asked me to have a look at their laptop (ACER Aspire 3000) where the laptop seemed to be unresponsive as soon as it hits windows. In actual case, what is happening is that the Keyboard and Trackpad on the laptop are unresponsive once windows starts loading. Plugging in a USB keyboard and mouse works perfectly. The laptop runs Windows XP.

    The keyboard/trackpad:
    WORKS in the BIOS
WORKS in safe mode (and choosing safemode)
DOES NOT WORK any time after the 'loading windows' screen pops up - eg when disk checking is scheduled, you cant press a key to cancel it.

In windows, it seems to recognise the inputs for about a second every minute as you can hold a key down or keep moving the trackpad and eventually it will respond.

Any ideas as to what is going on? There was no spills on the keyboard as far as i am aware and no dropping either.

Oh and I have tried shutting off a load of autostarting services and programs, have given it a full spyware and virus scan (both clean) so im at a loss as to what is actually wrong with it.

    go into Device Manager:

Control Panel -> System -> click the Hardware Tab and select device manager.

try removing the mouse/keyboard and reboot.

Download latest drivers for the trackpad and reinstall them
