PS2 games on PS3

First of all, I know the 40GB PS3 without PS2 support is the only one still being produced, but I know a couple of places that still have the 80GB (NTSC, I'm in Texas) model available.

So I'm faced with the option of either rushing to buy a $500 80GB unit so that I can play my stack of PS2 games on it, or holding off until MGS4 and GTA4 are released and getting the $400 40GB model. Or maybe even holding off longer with rumours of more price cuts and a much smaller unit in the pipes...

I'm just really irritated about the lack of PS2 backward compatibility. I only have so many inputs on my TV/amp :(

I just want to know, is it a good platform for playing PS2 games on? I read that you need an adapter to copy the saves from memory cards to the internal hard disk. I'd see this as an advantage because It'd be possible to make permanent backups of the saves without an x-port or similar device.
What I don't like about Gamecube games on the Wii is that the wiimote is disconnected while playing them, so that means no home menu, no remote power switch or reset! :( (yes, I'm that lazy).

Does the PS3 suffer from the same problems?
Are there any high-profile games that aren't supported by the 80GB model's software emulation?
Are there any rumours of plans to re-introduce PS2 compatibility?
Are there any other issues I should be aware of?

I just want to add that all this tinkering with the lineup really causes hesitation and doubt in potential buyers like me :(

I'm afraid I can't answer your first post! But I agree with your second one.I didn't know until I had mine that the difference was more than just the hard drive. Even the guy in the shop didn't know(xtra vision, dont blame um tbh) They should have given clearer titles to each machine, ie (gamers, casual, home media) whatever! Instead of indicating that the only difference between each machine was HDD space. I would have liked the memory card reader and extra USB and the ability to play PS2 games. I also heard that the higher versions (60B and 80GB) have better graphics? Is this true? Is that not like selling 2 XPS M1710 laptops as being a 40GB and a 60GB yet you've loaded one with a 7900GTX and the other with a 7290GTX? I'm just a little pissed at the confusion thats all. But as many will say "should have googled it" bull****!

There is a Sony website for backward compatibility, just google it. If its not on their list, they haven't tested it yet. Some suffer with varying levels of problems, which they show on this list
Anything they say works has for me, the ones they don't have on the list don't yet, for me anyway. PS3 improves slightly PS2 performance as you can upscale it so it looks better on HDTV.

Were the 40GBs not clearly marked in every shop as not playing PS2 games? When I was buying my 60GB, every place was quite clear on it - Smyths, Gamestop, Virgin, HMV and XTravision. Even websites such as Play.com had it clearly shown about the lack of BC.

ihear that they will bring out the bc for the 40gb, people are saying it'll happen at the next ps2 price drop, and whats worse (but not for me have a 60gb) it'll cost

clearly marked where? on the box? cause it's not in the product book in extra vision! I'll look for the thing about the graphics,i was pretty pissed off reading someone say that the "80GB is gear toward hardcore gamers while the 20 and 40GB models are for the casual gamer or blu ray enthusiast." BULL****! How does make it anymore a gamers model because it has extra space???? :O If anything that makes it more of a media center/blu ray type chap! I play mine all the friggin time so I don't like the idea that a larger hard drive means I'm a slightly lamer gamer! :( im glad it doesn't seem to be true anyway!

I have no idea where you are reading this stuff.
We (Europe) never had the 80GB or 20GB PS3 so all that stuff is American based.

Well what would stop me from buying a PS3 stateside if it had better performance. And yeah, quite a large portion of the internet and it's info spills out from the states!

Yes, when the 60GB and 40GB were on sale at the same time, the 40GB boxes were marked, and any place I saw it had a label on the shelf as well warning to the lack of BC.

Personally I'm waiting for the white slimline model bundled with Final Fantasy XIII and a rumble controller. A HDMI cable in the box would be nice too but I'm not going to hold out for miracles.

By the time all those stars line up they'll probably have the ability to sell all my PS2 games back to me on their online shop.
