I was considering going up just for I'm a Cyborg, but I got a R3 copy of it during the week. Just waiting for it to arrive, any day now.

I decided yesterday I wanted to see Katyn, only to discover that it's sold out tomorrow. And they have an extra screening on Wednesday but I can't go. Oh well...

Yes I caught it at the Berlin festival yesterday. Big crowd at it, even had a tv crew outside the cinema as we were walking out...looking for opinions etc! But back to the actual film, didn't particularly enjoy it. It dragged on in places and even though I've a great love for history (espeically this period) it just did not capture my full attention for the two hours like it should have. There were also a few moments where they used actual archive footage and this felt a little out of place with the entire feel of the film. Thinking about it a little bit more, I would have preferred two hours of this sort of footage. The acting in the film was questionable, as were the subtitles throughout - A number of spelling mistakes were made along with a few grammatical errors (probably made a few myself here). Score was decent, cinematopgraphy was nice even if we've seen this style before, but overall it was a poor show.

Hmm Orphanage was a little disapointing. Had a terrific ending, but felt there was a bit of an over-reliance on "jumps" and generic horror codes (far too much string-swelling tbh). A rare film where the pay off is far more satisfying than the build up (which was largely by the numbers and dull). Worked better as a character drama than a horror.

People be around on Sunday for a pre / post "I'm a Cyborg" discussion?

The Orphanage was solid enough and well made... but really didn't bring anything new to the table whatsoever. It's all been seen elsewhere before.

And yep... I'll be around for I'm a Cyborg anyway...

Didn't get to see the new one, but the original is one of the most fantastic and disturbing thrillers ever made. However, even though the remake is by Michael Haneke as well (director of the original) the trailer suggests that it is kinda redundant if you have seen the original: like a shot for shot remake. It may not be, but that is just the impression I got.
Tell me this, does one of the captors still mess with our heads and rewind the film at one point in order to make things go in his favour?

Yeah as far as I know it is a shot for shot remake it even still has the naked city song in the soundtrack. To answer your question yes they had that scene and what a scene it was ha.

Well the surprise film was 'The Escapist' I didn't think it was all that great.. The first half hour is a little bit on the bewildering side, but once it settles down it's a solid enough film... but does feel a bit like Prison Break: The Movie. And for some reason they seem to have borrowed some of the music from the original Terminator film.

I also went along to see I'm A Cyborg today... which was utterly fantastic.

The world premiere of Eden finished off the festival this evening.... It was a pretty basic little story and not terribly fascinating... but it was an incredibly well made film. It looked absolutely fantastic. Fully funded by Irish money too.

Surprise film seems like a bit of a disapointment alright. Why I'm always reluctant to by blind tickets. Must do sometime for the buzz, but rarely see a surprise film that lives up to expectations.

I'm a Cyborg was wonderful though. Monkeyfudge, was that you and another boardsie in the row behind me yelling "Boardsie?" at some dude wearing a triforce hoodie :p

I thought the Escapist was excellent. You needed to pay attention to pick up the little clues and I was a bit suspicious at the start but really enjoyed it in the end.

I agree about Eden - superbly acted and directed but not much of a story.

I really liked the escapist as well. Was very happy with it in the end. It was exciting enough to hold my attention for the duration. Great performance by Brian Cox. Loved the old school feel to the film as well. Not all that original a story or anything but the strange choice of structure was enough to throw me off. Was thinking right to the end whether I would prefer a different flashback/forward structure until it all made sense.

Really liked the soundtrack which really injected the scenes with alot of energy and urgency as well.

i was dissapointed that the surprise film was the escapist.
i had seen it listed on the sundance festival website and i figured it would be the surprise film because if it was at sundance why wasent in the rest of the dublin festival, but i had hoped that it wouldent be it.
i know they couldent have topped last years 300 but i always feel like the surprise film should be a treat, and for me irish/uk films rarely are. Brian Cox was great of course but it just dident rock my world.
overall i wasent too impressed with the lineup in the festival this year. there were a few too many classic films being shown, and why did we need to see Once again? we all know its done well we dont need it rammed down our throats anymore. there were nearly more films on general show at the cinema that i would have prefered to go see than in the festival.
oh well, fingers crossed for next year.

The scheduling was a bit wonky this year too. There was a lot of films I couldn't go to see because of overlapping screening times...

It was a mad dash from I'm a Cyborg to the Surprise film and I ended up with crappy seat as a result.

Monkeyfudge, I know what you mean about the overlapping screen times. I didn't go to I'm a Cyborg because I knew I'd have to run to the Savoy and get a crap seat for the surprise film. I'll make sure to catch it on it's release though.

I also didn't go to Redacted as it was out in Dundrum and I'd have had to miss 2 movies in town and I didn't go to The Lookout because it started while all the previous, 6 o'clock films were still showing! There were also a few mad 5 minute dashes from the Screen to the Cineworld which could have been avoided by better scheduling.

Overall I thought the programme was a bit weaker than previous years but I still saw some really good films like The Unknown, Honeydripper, Shotgun Stories, There Will Be Blood, Mongol and Battle in Seattle.

Oh and for Eden last night it was reserved seating... but it was a bit of a joke as I don't think the Savoy must use that system very often as you have to bend over and put your head about 1 foot away from the row of seats to find out what letter they are... it's like dark brown on black... very hard to find your seat.
