would this not be something a renault dealer would do with diagnostics?

    yes but not with diagnostics.
one of the (many ) time i had trouble with my megane (the key went wallop the week between xmas and new years) i came across a "keygen" for renault cars.
you insert you VIN and model of car and the code from inside the fob , and it gives the immobiliser code for the car.

Can you not just pop the bonnet, connect up another car via Jump Leads, and then turn off the alarm with the key ?

The immobilizer will stay on if the battery is dead, you need power to the immobilizer before it will reconize the key;) Try charging the battery or buying a new one;)

If there is no fault then do this -
If the door is locked, press the unlock buton on the remote they use the key to unlock.
If it is unlocked, press the lock button on the remote then use the key to lock it.

If that does not work then you can use the EKA code. The code can be got from the dealer. It is input by turning the key in the drivers door in a certain order. Info is in the owners manual or easily found with google.
If there is no fault with the car but the key is faulty the EKA code may need to be input every time you re-start.
If you need a new key or to diagnose the fault it will require either dealer attention or a specialist with high end equipment.

Thanks for that much appreciated, I think I'll have to go with the code as my key doesnm't actually ever open or lock the door, it's solely based on the alarm button

    Cheers for your help
