What are youre favourite alternative gangster movies?

By alternative I mean non Mafia related ones(Godfather,Goodfellas etc)

    My personal fave is Thursday

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124901/

Its one of the best movies Ive ever seen and I enjoy it more every time I see it.Its funny, violent and has a brilliant cast and some neat little twists and turns in it.I would heartily recommend it to any movie fan,no matter what their genre of choice is.

It never got a proper release here or in the UK but a Danish release of it is available on ebay. Its just a bare bones release but when a movie is this good, who needs extras.
    10/10

Some others i would recommend include

    Dog Bites Dog
    The Pusher Trilogy
Things to do in Denver when you're dead
    Last Man Standing
    The Agitator
    Menace 2 Society

Any more recommendations from you guys?

I must look that up now, thanks for the recommendation. As for gang movies, the only outstanding one that springs to mind is the excellent Menace 2 Society, though recently I did enjoy Harsh Times. Both very mainstream though, I've sure I've seen plenty more I just can't recollect at the moment, wouldn't be something I'd watch very often. The only other one I can even think of is this one, and it was only passable. The particular market for that genre has probably died since Ice T and Snoop Dogg released that torrent of low budget, hilariously crap 'hood' movies to milk the most money out of the least effort possible a few years ago.

Just saw Thursday the other day actually. I really enjoyed it as well. Watched it knowing absolutely nothing about it and it was good fun. It didn't ultimately live up to the opening but all in all it was a little gem.

Here's one you might consider.....Gary Oldman, Sean Penn & Ed Harris in an Irish American (Hells Kitchen) ganster movie from 1990.

    State of Grace

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100685/

Also stars John Tuturro & John C. Reilly

I also forgot to mention The Warriors.

Its chessier than a Wotsits factory but is great fun!

Hmm, I don't see how Shiri is a gangster movie, are you confusing it with something else maybe? Shiri is about North Korean agents infiltrating the South, and hijacking some explosives.

Gonin isn't particularly great, I have to say.

Really must watch Hard Boiled again though. John Woo at his best. ;)

I enjoyed Thursday but only in a 'Jaysus that is so **** it's hilarious' kinda way. Did you guys actually like it?

    I thought it was a real sub-Tarantino **** acting, porn-set, video-shop-geek-wetdream movie.

I absolutely loved it and would have no reservation about recommending it to anyone. Its obviously influenced by QT but there are lots of movies that are.

You are the first one Ive ever heard of not liking it.

    Each to their own!

Loved this classic starring Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone. A real alternative and a rip roaring display by Ben Kingsley.
