HDMI Interface 3-to-1 Video Switch Vs chasing and replastering a wall?

    Hi all,

I recently renovated my living room and the electrician advised me to build 1 x SCART and 1 x HDMI cable into the wall with one end popping out mid wall where I plan to wall mount a large HD TV and the other ends pop out at the bottom corner of the wall where the cable TV and Blu Ray player etc will sit. Stupidly I took his word and didn't research exactly what connections I'd need to futureproof the set up as much as possible.

Now that I've read some of the posts here it seems I should have asked for at least 2 if not 3 HDMI cables to be built in so as they are going to be the way to connect to devices in the future. The choice I now have is to either rip the plaster over the cables out again install 2 more HDMI cables and re-plaster or buy a HDMI Interface 3-to-1 Video Switch from Belkin for around €150 plug the one HDMI cable into that and then multiple devices into the switch as HDMI devices beome more pervasive. What do people recommend? Is the cost of re-doing the wall and installing 2 more HDMI cables worth it over a quick and easy solution costing €150?

Right now the only device needing HDMI is a Blu Ray player as I only have standard NTL which is SCART based. If I switch over to HD from Sky or when NTL start offering it will I need a new box and will that be HDMI? Does anyone know if I can plug a Nintendo Wii into a HDMI switch?

Last thing I need input on is DVR's. Are they worth getting and if so what models do people recommend? I heard there is a HD Dreambox (Dreambox 8000?) coming out with a built in hard drive. Would that kill two birds with the same stone? Anyone know when it is due out?

Any and all advice much appreciated.

Get yourself a reveicer for video and audio, most of the newest incorporate HDMI switching(and upscaling to HDMI) which would do the job for you.

I wouldn't go ripping up the walls just to 'future-proof' unneccessarily. You should be fine as you are at the moment.

Hi Johnny, whats a "receiver"? Can you post a link to an example?

AV receiver, basically, you plug all your sources into it and a load of speakers. then you plug ONE hdmi cable from it to your tv.

the best brands are Denon & Pioneer with Onkyo being unbelieveably good this year.

any of the onkyo gear from the 605 up will do but from the screen you're thinking of from your other post, i'd recommend the Onkyo 805 or higher

    http://www.allianceelectric.ie/products/homecinema/amps/txsr805.htm

it has 3 HDMI inputs and loads of other standard video inputs (for ntl etc)

it would be a lot better than those HDMI switchers, unless you get a very good one from the likes of QED or Geffen
