Anyone know if there is such a thing as a backwards stepwise multiple regression or is a stepwise multiple regression backwards by definition??!Will be running the regression through SPSS but while you can select the stepwise method or the backward method it seems you can't select both? Have been reading up on it but am beginning to think I'm missing something obvious!

Backward is stepwise in SPSS - just use that option. The 'stepwise' option is the same as 'forward' except it removes the least useful predictor after each step.
