Costs of photos in Cork

Just found this out this morning, very very P$%#ed off

My sister got a letter from her daughters primary school recommending a photo studio here in Cork and that they would get a special voucher so a photo would cost 40 Euro instead of 180 (which would include 1 hours studio time) called a one hour lifestyle photography session.

Her husband has a brain tumour and she was hoping to get a few photos of him and the kids together so she went to this studio in Ballincollig. When she came back, they informed my sister they don't do prints only framed Photos and after putting her into a room with canned music, played a DVD with images of her husband and kids together which was of course very emotional and made her cry.
I just found out, all this from my wife who was talking with her yesterday

She has ordered 3 photo books for 1800 Euro (1 for every kid). when I found out I was shocked at these prices and the emotional blackmail used, I would just phone her up now but her husband had a seizure last night so this sort of carry on is the last thing she/I would need to discuss

I am going to leave it a few days --- confirm cost/product/name

    Question being
Is this a normal thing Is this cost that high in other studios Or is it some type of Scam

Anyone any ideas on where or what I can do to complain, or do you think I am Just completely unjustified to think that these costs and the manner it was done are scandalous:mad:

It's actually quite common to use this method (not only in Cork).

It is a disgrace really. The overall cost is about average for that. A friend of mine was quoted €1200 for a 1hr studio session for family portraits, with 2 8x10 prints and 2 6x4 prints. (No frames included).

So, the general price you have sounds about right.

However, the emotional method they used is very poor taste.

As for complaints - you can only complain to the company/studio.

that sounds fairly off the wall for 3 photobooks. I'd cancel the order immediately. I know the studio you're on about but I won't be naming anyone obviously. If your sister wants, I can recommend a studio in the city that certainly wont fleece her or try any of that emotional blackmail bull****.

for what it's worth, I think there should be a formal complaint put in.. maybe with the IPPA? (Assuming the studio are members of course)

Yeah, it's a pretty common method used. I'm really not a fan of it.

In this situation, it's too easy to just order these things in an emotional state.

Another pretty common way of working the money out of people is competitions advertising a free photoshoot, and you come out with a 6x4 or 8x6 print... but they'll show you the rest of the images that you can buy.

that's just poor form to use the emotional aspect to coax you into purchasing the pics.
Crazy money but I am always wary of these places where they offer you a portrait at a discount price...once they get you in they will pile on the pressure to spend more money.

OP, I hope everything works out, I just can't help feel sorry for the kids, of course they probably don't fully understand but it's tough anyway for them.
