Question about working hours...

    Hi all,

I work shifts, normally 2 week days followed by 2 week nights. Currently I'm on my first week of nights.

When I finish work this Friday night/Sat morning it will be between 4 and 6am. My boss wants me back in at work at 10am on Sat morning. Is this allowed??

From the citizensinformation.ie website I found the following info:

"You are entitled to 11 consecutive hours rest in any period of 24 hours. In addition you should get 24 consecutive hours rest in any period of 7 days and this should normally follow on from one of the 11 hour rest periods already mentioned. As an alternative your employer can give you two 24 hour rest periods in the week that follows one in which you did not get this entitlement."

Does this mean when I finish work on Sat morning I'm entitled to 11 hours rest before coming back to work??

    Thanks in advance,

    Water-man

yeah my understanding of it was always u had to have a break of 11 hrs between each working shift. However i'm a bit confused with the two 24 hr breaks if this is a loophole?? anyways theres no way i would do it

yes it does - they can hardly tell you , not to sleep for risk of being fired now can they - maybe your boss just doesnt realise that there is only 4 hours between shifts - if he does realise this he's and asshole

Also considering traveling home, getting ready and traveling back do you get more than 2 hours sleep???!

I feel for you dude, have been in weird situations like this, many employers just really dont care.

I understand that we all need money to live, and am aware its getting harder and harder to get any sort of job, but are you sure this is the right job for you? Or if you really enjoy it your gonna have to have a chat with your boss.

Well best of luck mate, let us know how it goes !! ^^

It means you have the right to 11h between your shifts (i.e. you can't go out partying after a shift all night and then call in to work and claim you have the right to 11h of rest now).

I do know that guards however have worked some crappy hours. I know a lad who finished work at 6am and was back in from 2pm - 10pm. I know there are 4 hours in the difference there but tis still not 11 hrs. I don't know. Just offering my tuppence worth.

If finish nights on the Friday morning, you really shouldn't be back in work until the Monday. What your boss is asking is a complete joke tbh. Working shift is bad enough but that will kill you.
